thoughts on Hybrid Crossfire X

I have HCX setup(3200 and 2400 Pro) and its pretty much my first attempt using dual GPU's. I thought it was an awesome ideas for ATI to find a way to use the IGP and PCIE together.

What are people's thoughts on it?, for some reason having Hybrid Crossfire X appeals to the enthusiest side to me

it's good actually. but only for htpc purposes and light gaming. and also, you could have also gone better had you chose the 3450 instead of the 2400.

I have the 32xx on my motherboard, never even got to use it/try out how it is. I might actually try it out when I get my 3870x2.

When i was getting my system, i didn't know that you need a low end card to use it. And i was getting a 4670 , even though a 4670 runs many times faster than hybrid, i still wanted to get that extra performance

Honestly... it really isn't worth it.

If you're going to put a discrete card in, you might as put in something with some power.... Otherwise, onboard can handle most anything that is non-gaming.
I'd say the situations where it is worth it exist, but they're currently few and far between.

ATI really needs to:
1) Enable Hybrid Crossfire between 780/790 and HD 4350 & 4550 cards
2) Give enthusiasts the opportunity to run power-saving set-ups that alternate between on-board video and either Hybrid or true Crossfire based on demand (on-board for desktop/video-playback use, Crossfire for gaming/video-editing/rendering)

Your exactly right on one hand

I just like the fact that AMD/ATI gave us the option to be able to use the IGP and not let it go to waste(Everyone on here seems to like to get the most out of everything.)

If you have a 48xx series video card then their is no point to using Hybrid Crossfire. I do find that the Hybrid Crossfire is great for playing alot of Source Games however.

Eventually it would be nice if AMD/ATI could have the IGP be running certain GPU operations along with a 4870x2.

110% percent if you consider I want to take it one step further.

While it was a great concept, they failed horribly in a proper execution of the technology. It could have been HUGE, and with Intel getting into the foray of combining - it will be what we see for the foreseeable future.

But if you go to ATI's chart of compatibility, it's barely compatible with anything. And as everyone said - 4xxx series... forget it.

I went with 4650 at the time, and it wasn't much better than the onboard. So now I'm at 4870 land....

2 generations until perfection is my guess. Next one will be more cross GPU compatible, the one after that will work like everyone wants...

Stated goal we should get to them. Run 2-4 monitors, if 4 - no HD or tough stuff. My 4870 handles high rez full screen on two monitors now - but if I could devote that to gaming and folding and let the onboard do everything else - I'd be happy.

Imagine this - you could set affinity's for the processors like you can the CPU's - how cool would that be. Even better for all you multiple GPU guys.

Best case, ATI and Nvidia would include GPU management software right in (ATI's CCC) their software.

EDIT - do not take my statement above to imply that discreet graphics are going away. I don't think that will ever be the case thanks to us gamers. But combo chips will be the norm

So say I paired up my 3870 X2, with my on board 3200, what exactly would I expect from that? If anything at all? Just curious, I'm not too familiar with all this since I've never done anything having to do with on board.

no benefits at all since they're not compatible.

i wish ati did something like nvidia's hybrid power with high end cards to save a lot of electricity when not running 3D apps.

You dolt.

The HD2400 is the same as the HD3450.
Variations depend on clocks and such. But they are are the same GPU core.
Just like the HD2600Xt & the HD3650 being the same.

HD2k series to HD3k series was a big rebrand for the most part.
They improved the HD2900Xt with the HD3870, but not enough to keep up with the 8800GT.

I've got my 3470 + 790GX running in Hybrid Crossfire now, and I will, at some point, get around to installing Steam & test playability of HL2 with that set-up. In theory, it should be a bit behind a stand-alone 3650. Tom's Hardware did this comparison back when the 780G chipset first made Hybrid Crossfire possible. How much things have improved with driver revisions and the ramped up 790GX is hard to say.

Someone questioned multi-monitor support with Hybrid Crossfire, and I know it has been done. There's some cool pics in this thread that shows a 3470 + 780G feeding 3x 24" Samsung monitors.
