Thoughts on the BFME2 Demo

Well after going against my conscience, I decided to try out the Battle for Middle Earth 2 Demo. It had its ups and downs...

One of the major thing EA was boasting about this latest edition where graphics. Most of which I did not see. They added some bump mapping effects and just started to use shader versions 3, but still really didn't turn out too great. Alot of the old skins and models seemed to be rehashed and terrain textures where just grainy for me...

As for the gameplay I was relieved to see that the unit response time was actually... what it was supposed to be like? One of the biggest problems for BFME was that units where ******ed and took forever (Or completely ignored you all together) when you gave them a command. Also the removal of the build plots was a good fix, but economy still seemed to be abit novice.

and with that I really didn't feel much for the game, to me its basically a BFME1.2 because its what the first one should have been like.

But this leaves me in a sticky spot in which RTS game I should purchase... EaW or BFME2. Lucas Arts has always been hit or miss with many of their games, and all rts attempts. and EA just gives crappy game support and I feel like I am cheating on myself if I buy their products... So im not really sure on what game I will get.

What are your thoughts on BFME2?

Oh my god,
I pretty much want to throw a toaster in a bathtub after playing this demo.

For the past 2 months I have been following every release for this game and I download it tonight. Unplayable. There are so really great increases made to the visuals but guess what, gameplay has gone to s***.

You have walls, but they are puny/expensive AND you cant put troops on them like in BFME1.

You have to rush, because thats all the AI does and your resource collectors (mines) are so weak that they are sure to be destroyed if you dont rush them first.

Then the game jsut becomes a huge rushfest, where all you do is send wave after wave of fully upgraded troops into a big stalemate battle. Gameplay instantly become repetitive and boring. Ugh, Im disgusted by it, absolutely pissed to no end. I have tried to give it a go a number of times in the past day but I always jsut get frustrated and leave. Not to mention the AI might as well have just 2 settings "completely ******ed" and "ungodly impossible".

If you want to try your luck with this 1.4 gigabyte hard drive black hole, be my guest. Go to

www.filemirrors.com and type in "bfme2demo". You can get about 650K/s on some servers if you look around a bit.

The gameplay isn't the best. I don't like how the squads all stick together, I think that when you tell a group of warriors to attack another group, they should swarm in screaming like psychos, and surround the enemies, not patiently waiting their turn to step up and take a few swings. I want to see more epic battles like those of the movies. Walls are stupid, they don't work right. The AI sucks, they just constantly charge their cavalry past your army, and suicide against your walls.

As for the graphics, the only good ones were on the main menu. There is no AA control (I don't think), and you can't zoom in all the way. Overall, it is dissipointing for a high-end system at least (Ultra-high graphics)

BTW - It sucks how you can't rebuild 1 piece of the wall after the enemies easily destroy it and its rubble.
One thing I've learned recently is to not bother with game demos because they are nothing like the full game. I played the AOE3 demo and thought it was the most stupid thing I had ever seen. I now play the full AOE3 game constantly on LAN with friends and love it. I also played the EaW demo and thought it was retarted, but I bet that the real game is excellent. My point? Forget you even saw the demo, judge the game by what's released.

You can judge it because this is a full demo. It has been through Beta and this is a released demo. The only changes that will happen at this point, considering it will be released very soon, will be stat adjustments.

Also skirmish is the main mulitplayer game mode, Conquest mode isn't the main multiplayer mode in EaW. In the EaW demo you didn't even play the demo. And believe me, I can bet you any amount of money that this demo will look the exact same as the the full verison and play the same as well.
The last good game EA released was BF1942...and that was like 4 years ago...
EA can make some good games, only if they gave them the proper support, instead of dropping older games and bumping them onto old servers and never patch it again.

do a wikipedia on electronic arts, its hillarious.
1.3GB, I'm gonna try it anyways.
I was really disappointed with BFME 2. Typically the demos are not as true to the real game as assumed. I found the fact that you could build and spam units to attack buildings irritating. For any RTS, I feel, its all about online play. I see a real lack of originality to strats. Bummer dude.

You didn't have to deal with the fiasco of patch 1.02 and the promises that EA made about BFME patch 1.03 and the inefficiency and lies that EA Apoc says who works for EALA. BFME patch 1.03 was supposed to be out last october. We are still waiting for it, and the only way to get it is through a leaked version of 1.03. EA is simply a bunch of idiots who make false promises. So we where expecting what they said, because what they did say where basic parts of the game, many of which they removed.

Without sounding like an "I told you so"......I told you so
I've been playing this all weekend and it's absolutely awesome! The game is really, really well balanced and all the new powers and races are spectacular. I don't usually rave about a game, but this one is very well done. If anyone reading this liked the first one, Starcraft, Warcraft, AOE, Galactic Battlegrounds, or anything similar, get this one. There's also an extra game within the game that is almost like a world conquest RISK game with a LOTR skin on it. The graphics and sound are both well done. I give this one a thumbs up all the way around!

I'm going to buy this as soon as I save up enough (I also owe my dad $150...)
I doubt many of you went through the hastle and b.s. that the BFME was. If you had payed attention to the gamereplays.org forums, you would have known that EA lied about patch details and its release time. They said as a fact at one point that the BFME 1.03 patch would be out mid october 2005. Well guess what, it just came out 2 weeks ago. Also the way that EA ruined the game with 1.02 only shows that they will do anything to try to please the costumers...

What I mean by that statement above was that there was this forum called MEMW or something like that... and there where a bunch of people who complained and suggested to make these ******ed balances that would only profit the races they liked. Guess what. EA listened to everything they said and RUINED the balance and gameplay of BFME in patch 1.02. Many pros quit the game because of it. Also EA has HORRIBLE connectivity problems concerning firewalls and mostly routers as well. It should not be on the user end to spend 10 hours of research in how to enable your fire wall, when other noobs will not do the same.

EA screwed up with the first BFME and there is no reason to believe why they won't do it again.
