Thoughts on vB4?

Looks mighty fine. It's up on vbulletin.com for view, and members can download.

I'm still trying to decide whether to use vB4 or IP.B.

What are you going to use it for?

Personally, I'd rather go with SMF, as the actual markup is cleaner, and the 2.0 RC seems more impressive than the vBullitin facelift.
I love SMF. But only because VB is expensive.

I havent used either in 6 months or so though.

Your poll is full of fail. It has no SMF option.
I've never heard of SMF, what's so great about it?
It's utter crap...simple machines forum FTL...its the worst software I've ever used...way too simple, not many options, it looks way to rounded (everything...buttons, wrapper, etc)

I'd go with vB4...so MANY OPTIONS.

Yeah, sure.

Crap? It works, and doesn't usually barf on regular updates.

Too simple? What kind of reason is that?

There are plenty of options in the control panel.

Simple Machines Forum is (in my opinion) one of the best open source forums. It's customizable, and there are a lot of mods available for it.

There are also tons of themes as well.

I've always used phpBB for free forums
Yeah, but phpBB is the actual steaming pile of crap that someone above attributed to SMF.

If you're really dead set on paying for a forum, I guess vBulletin is all right.

SMF surely is not utter crap. SMF actually is a great forum software. For many reasons.

1: free / open source
2: fast and stable
3: easy to modify to suit your needs. API etc is great in SMF2
4: skinning is easy.
5: support is great, even if it is free.
6: it may be simple at the start. but it has the base for you to create your own unique community that is as un-simple as you would like it to be.

Agreed. phpbb is horrid!

Actually I would disagree with paying for vbulletin. I personally have a license with VB that will probably never be used within the lifetime of our solar systems sun..

The crap vb pulled with the licensing system and the lame launch of vb4 has totally soured my opinion of them..

I paid a large fee upfront to have a lifetime license for vbulletin. on the belief for a small fee every, (6 months or a year i forget) I had access to all future upgrades no matter how small or big.. WRONG!

Not only this. but if i want to continue to use VB4+ i have to re-buy the new license.. Then there is the fact they kinda 'sat on their asses' when they launched 3.X and waited until what? this year to start even working on VB4? ugh.. and their 4.0 isn't even going to be a full rewrite. they are going to rewrite it over several smaller launches.. wth? I would love to see M$ do that with windows....

On another note. upon wind of this crap with VB I renewed my IPB license. and have been enjoying my IPB3 ever since. Do I look back at vb? yeah, to laugh..

I pre-ordered my 4 suite, don't get me started on the new company that owns Vbulletin, but I have 4 installed and am happy with it...

I want the best for my community so I went with Vbulletin, SMF or phpBB are good solutions if your community is rather small. VB is the only way to go if you have a heavy DB imo! So easy!
Having somebody who can tune a database helps a lot, too.

If you want to run something so large that handles 1000 simultaneous users without blinking, like OCN, then you're going to have to learn a lot, and learn it fast. Of course you probably won't be huge overnight unless you have about a $30 million marketing budget, but if you had that, then you could just hire people...

Hahaha memories.

Have VB4 mostly dialed in, except for the tons of bugs...Surprised its this sloppy with RC2.

Now have to practice merging VB DBs, plus two PHPbb DBs into one. Global domination of a niche market is never pushbutton, thank god for impex!

As a moderately experienced vBuliten administrator, I will say that sometimes simplicity is not an awful thing (and sometimes vB leaves it to be desired).
It is a powerful platform, though, and if you'll need a heavily customized implementation it certainly gives you tons of options. I have always liked IPB as a user, though I've never had the opportunity to work with it's back side.

My choice in free forums is SMF, for most of the same reasons mentioned already - phpBB was a pioneer in the free forum world, but other software suites have come to market with much more polished products.
