Tired of routers

Ive been using wireless routers for quite some time and they always keep failing. I'm totally going crazy now *rage*. It's been years of constant dropping, needs to reset, dying routers. I've tried NetGear, Linksys, DLink and they all died on me. My second DLink worked for a 2-3 months before it started to need resets every hours, now it drops constantly.

Using the router we currently have: My PC wired, my laptop wireless, my brothers laptop wireless, my mom's laptop wiresless and a PS3. Whenever the PS3 is online nothing else can get internet. I don't know if it is because my router is too limited or is dying again but I'm really getting tired of this.

Is there a quality consumer router that could handle 3-4 connections at a time? If not, I heard I could use a computer as a router. What would I need to do that? I imagine I'd have to buy adapters. If it's the only solution I don't mind paying for it...

Which model d-link router do you currently have? What kind of activity do the people using the internet do on the internet? Torrents?

Some normal consumer home routers cannot handle torrents like other routers can. As for a custom router you can use untangle or pfsense. I've used both and they work very well.

Check out the system requirements for each.

My D-Link was the worst router I ever owned, yet it was 3 years old DIR-615, thing was crap. Went Linksys and never looked back. Routers are always hit and miss, some last longer than others, some don't.

Well, I've been using Netgear routers my whole life and haven't had any problems - generally mine runs 2-3 wired connections and 2-3 wireless connections (sisters laptop, mates iPhones/iPod touches) and have never had any problems. I don't want to make anyone angry, but I do think it is a brand issue - most of my mates who use D-link routers often have problems.

Im not too sure on this stuff but ive heard cisco routers are meant to be really good. I mean my uni uses them all over the campus and we have wifi everywhere there. Its never dropped or anything.

Thanks for the info. I'm currently using a DLink DI-624 Xtreme G. None of my routers were able to handle wireless computers using torrents, when my wired computer was using them it was soso. But the router drops on everything, streams, youtube, when my brother plays an online game, even flash games, PS3, when he updates windows, etc. Even the phone kills the connection right away. I wish I could run cables through the house but that would be alot of trouble. I'll check the links.

I had 2 Linksys and they both died on me, same model, maybe it was just a crappy rev. That's why I switched to DLink, was happy with it until it started failing.

My netgear router is the one that lasted me the longest. Which model do you currently use Powelly?

Cisco looks exactly like Linksys ones so I'm a bit :S about them. Maybe I'm just really unlucky (or I'm a serial router killer).

Thanks everyone for the insights, rep round

I use a WRT54G v3.1 (same as WRT54GL) with Tomato. It handles 3 wired clients + numerous wireless ones (3 laptops, desktop, sometimes an additional laptop/2). So far my WRT54G has been going strong for 2 years, and I'm not experiencing any problems with it, so I have no reason to suspect that it will die soon. It even handles torrents with ease

I had Trendnet and a D-Link die on me, both in less than a year. I've been running strong with a Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT for over a year with 8 connections (3 on the internal switch, and 5 on a second switch hooked up to the 4th port) pulling over 100GB per month. The only reset I ever had to do was for the cable modem once.

No problem. I have an untangle box with 1GB of ram, 320GB drive, and an atom n270 cpu and it runs great. Been up for 62 days with no restart. Before that I had a d-link DIR-655 which also worked quite well with torrents and other things. Never had to reset that one either.

Some routers just aren't cut out for torrenting and things like that.

The cisco routers are excellent now a days, which of course are owned by Linksys. Or backwards, Cisco owns Linksys. Either way, they are top notch now, and not crap that they were a few years ago.

Is it the router, or is it the user?

As far as having everything set up correctly.
My PS3 kicks me off of Xfire when it signs into PSN, so you're not the only one with a problem with that. I can still surf, but still get that Xfire issue.
of course thats the router youre using with problems, thats the one I happen to have and still have yet to set it up. I hate the dependancy of one being hardlined..stupid routers. hope you get a decent one in the future!

I run 15 physical servers and 20 virtual servers through my Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT v24.... although most of the time the traffic through that particular router is entirely downloading from the newsgroups
. I do serve up HTTP/S, RDP, FTP and a bunch of other stuff though...

Maybe it's bad karma. What'd you do to offend the technology gods?

Are you plugging your routers directly into the wall? i used to always have issues with linksys and dlink consumer routers and found that if i replaced the AC adapter with a good switch mode power supply they straightened right up.

Also, if you need the features/performance setup your own router with one of the many distros out there like pfSense, most of them support the majority of wireless cards...
Linksys and Netgear are top notch. I'd stay away from Belkin.

Also, could it be your internet connection?
You dont happen to leave your router on in the oven do you?

They Do not like heat at all with there limited Cooling.
Install DD-WRT. Watch router problems go away.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Buffalo. I have had the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 for about 3 years and it has been rock solid (been running tomato firmware on it). The most recent long uptime I can remember was like 130days, I had to turn off the power to work on some electric stuff so that put an end to that
. It's probably one of the best G routers out there. Oh, and my bro had to use it in his house with 5 other guys, due to them having a crappy linksys, so there was like 8 computers, an xbox 360, a wii and a printer on the network and they never had a problem. They had a high speed cable connection too.
