to be or not to be (am2 phenom)

HI! I´m new to the community, nice to be here! I´d like to ask a question tht´s been plaguing me for a while now and I can´t seem to find an answer.
As you can see from my sig. I have a AM2 mobo, but even though I´m fairly comfortable with my 4200 as it is I´ve considered upgradin to one of those new phenoms set to ship next year (deneb was the name I think).
Thing is, I haven´t found any benchmark to help me better understand the difference between HyperTransport 2.0 and 3.0..
Now... I wouldn´t like to spend what´s likely to be a bunch of cash on a processor if it´s going to be crippled to... say 80% average. Can you tell me if the HT really makes a noticeable difference? Thanks in advance

hey there,

well I don't know much more than you do but I found some info here at wiki. links, info and specs to view

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperTransport
The current Quad stepping OCs better with the current AMD chip set too, so still your somewhat 'crippled' in your OC!

The HT or "LDT" (Lightening Data Transfer) as AMD called it at one time should effect the performance to some degree with regards to the varation of the old (100MHz default) vs the new (2600MHz default) since its such a large varation.

i thinhk it would be the best when the releasing days gets even closer

i understand that deneb will be back supporting but there's no garentee yet that ur mobo will be supported,

I'm not even sure if my mobo is good enough for them lol

what about current phenoms? does anyone know of a benchmark comparing a phenom on an am2 boards versus am2+ one? I've seen a lot of sigs and many use phenom on am2 boards so I was wondering, maybe performance doesn't decreases too much

AM2 or AM2+ is probably a very little noticeable difference, you're board supports Quad Core so go ahead and get one. I made the mistake a while back when I had the AMD 5400+ I went to CompUSA, which was already bought out by TigerDirect/Systemax so they had good products, to buy a Quad Core CPU but instead I bought the Dual Core 6400+. Well a few months went by and I was very disappointeed with my purchase, until recently when I bought an EVGA 750i FTW and a Intel Core 2 Quad 6600..... talk about performance difference! This thing screams! The whole point is, DO NOT upgrade your old Dual Core, please go with a Quad! They are so cheap right now that its a no brainer! Even if you don't have an AM2+ motherboard, who cares! Just get a QUAD and then upgrade your Mobo later if you notice that your board just isn't "holding up" to your CPU.

Good Luck! And please take my advice seriously, I was in your same situation and I messed up badly.....

Thewebmaster179, this same question was asked on here not to long ago. Here is the thread that discusses this: http://www.overclock.net/amd-general...s-ht2-0-a.html.

I hope that sorts things out for you

Good luck

the main thing i can see is if you plan on ocing. if you are you are going to have to find a way to change the north bridge frequency on your current mother board. the phenoms have the memory controller on the cpu not the north bridge.
i think wpcedit will allow you too but i cant remmember if it doesnt support vista 32 or 64 bith though.
