To watercool My 4850 or get a 1 GB card

Okaty so i recently got an acer g24 monitor and my temps on the 4850 have been insane. 110 degrees plus and I dont just want to junk the card and keep playing at those temps. I need to decide whether it's worth watercooling the card or just getting a 1 gb card that is dual slot and will stay cooler at the higher resolution. i have enough rad's to dissipate the heat just dont know if its worth watercooling such a terrible card.

1GB for sure. And a HD4870 if you can.Or maybe a GTX260,if you can find one with the recent price drop

I assume you are playing at 1920x1200 and that's really squeezing the VGA,since it only has 512mb.

Have you tried playing with a higher fan speed?

Have your turned up the fan speeds yet? And it sounds like the airflow in your case could be lacking some. Try to fix those 2 if they are in fact 'broken'. If not then I say go ahead and water cool, its a great card and I really don't see why you might need a new one just because of temps.
100% fan speed all the time on the old CRT at 70% it was not getting this hot. My god there are 2.3 million+ pixels on the screen now. Its rediculous. Also Airflow in my case is superb. The card is getting plenty of air. I am running 4 120mm fans in the front of my antec 900

dude get another 4850 card with 1gb memory on it..and do a Xfire with the 512mb card as slave card and the 1gb card as primary..that way you won't stress out the 512mb card with the huge display..

i will not be getting a 4850 if I get another card. i will get a 4870 or 4890 and still CF the 4850 if I get another one. Its either another card or a kickstart for my quad.

Edit: what is HTH?

ok then its also my same suggestion get a 4870 or 4890 with 1gb card and make it your primary card and the 512mb card as a slave card that way it won't be stressed..

HTH=>Hope This Helps..

I hear the Zalman CPU coolers fit nicely on the 4850...

I'm going to be getting a pair of them for my 4850x2 probably.

I would have to agree with you. +reps

Have you tried running the card at a considerably lower resolution to test the temperatures? Say, run at 1440x900 to compare to his temps. If they're similar, we know the card is stressing on the resolution - if it's still higher, you have an ambient temperature or cooling problem... or just a bad card.
Honestly I am worrying for the summer too. i live in Tucson and have a swamp cooler. My house can get very hot and humid when the monsoons roll in. This needs to be fixed before summer.

I haven't but on my old CRT I was playing at xxxx x 1024 and xxxx x 860 or something like that. Sometimes my eyes hurt if I cant refresh at 85hz so the lower resolution had to do. When i was running at those resolutions the card rarely broke 80 degrees and idled at around 50. The card has always run a little bit hot.

Yeah that'd be a good idea, I'm at 1440x1050 and like I said at 40% fan right now it's 45C, I do though have a fan just underneath it exhausting some of the heat.

EDIT: Removing the fan underneath puts it upto around 48/9C

big displays strains the card alot even worse when you set a higher resolution..
