Mobility Radeon Vs. GeForce M: The CrossFire Advantage

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ire,2736.html#

Quote:
We’ve seen how two Mobility Radeon HD 5870s generally outperform a single GeForce GTX 480M, but a chart of the average performance difference will further prove the point.

Eurocom’s X1800 Leopard is the first notebook we’ve seen to approach mid-priced gaming desktop standards in 3D performance, slamming the runner-up GTX 480M. Nearly as impressive is that two Mobility Radeon cards cost $189 less than a single 480M, while providing 43.5% more performance.

We probably could have guessed this six months ago, but the GF100 isn't really a GPU you want in a mobile system, even cut down to 352 CUDA cores and running at 425 MHz. Of course, the company recently unveiled a more complete GeForce 400M family composed of GF104, GF106, and GF108 GPUs. We've seen GF104 and GF106 improve Nvidia's position against AMD on the desktop. Perhaps those same derivative GPUs will help lend the company's mobile parts better performance, more conservative thermal properties, and lower cost, too.

Our special thanks goes to Mark Bialic of Eurocom for making the comparison of two vastly-different graphics configurations possible from the same notebook platform.

Sorry but,

owned.

Also, what the hell lol:

1280x720 up to 1920x1080 sees no performance decrease? LOL

It should be noted, the CF configuration uses more power and puts out more heat but it is otherwise very fast.

i was going to say something snappy about how it took two 5870m's to beat a single 480m but then i saw this line.

Nah, no one would care, I mean if they used Nvidia cards before, they would know. Seriously. But the performance increase, is worth it by far.

A 5870M has the same specs as a 5770.

Idk, i still make the argument that 1 powerful gpu is always better than 2 less powerful gpus. Reason being is crossfire and sli have their problems, especially crossfire with the plethora of driver issue, DAMNIT ATI 1 DRIVER EVERY 3-5 MONTHS THAT FIXES STUFF.

GTX480M won just because of the power consumption. It's a bloody laptop!

Why does this laptop exist? When does this make more sense than a gaming desktop that costs 1/3 as much and gets twice the performance, and doesn't tend to cook itself like an egg on a sidewalk if you accidentally clog the back vents?

Not sure if any of you have done your homework on this one, but a single MXM+ 3.0 480M GPU is nearly $1000. A single 5870M is anywhere between $275-450. Price to performance, if you were going the route of spending on a laptop, the choice would be obvious to get the ATI products, as configuring for 2 of those 480Ms would cost you enough to buy 3-4 decently configured laptops/iPads in the GPU cost alone. I have done my homework on this, and it goes without saying, if you're going to spend that kind of money, even if it takes to to equal one, you'd have to be made of money in order to afford Nvidia.

How did they load it? If it's with furmark which does NOT reflect reality at all compared to real world loads (see Shinji's threads). The only reason I ask is because that's what I always ask when they run power comparisons. If it was furmark or others of its ilk, the xfire gpu power draw is probably 20% less.

A laptop like this with such a low battery life is aimed towards people who are plugging it in to an outlet, like frequent business travelers who have a hotel room / temporary office somewhere, not really for people who are travelling every few months to get away for the weekend or something.
