Hi, I have an oldish Toshi Satellite. It doesn't suck, but I'm bored with it and want to upgrade it. I've already stripped it down to the bones with nothing but a leatherman multi-tool and found the processor can be swapped out for (possibly) a better one - it currently runs an intel i3-330 2.13Mhz, and I have read that the i5-540 should fit the same socket. As it has built in graphics and no Pci port (only an internal micro pci that the wireless currently uses) I'm not holding out much hope of adding any kind of graphics card. But maybe if I took out the wireless I could run an adaptor cable to a graphics card as I've seen people create external cards with their own power supply? Reasonably sure SetFsb is not going to be compatible either, shame.

Bear in mind I don't want to sell it for a better one as this has proved quite a trooper and I'm a bit attached to it. I've already taken out the fan and discovered there was a heap of dust between it and the cooling radiator which was making it run hot, and I've also cut the vent for the fan air intake to get better airflow. It runs nice and cool now, normal usage only showing about 45-50 degrees atm!

I want ideas, people, not "nah, don't bother, get a better one"! haha

Ok, scratch that idea. After extensive research I've concluded that a graphics card is just not viable option. Too much hassle for not enough return and you'd need a separate monitor, and although a gaming sesh generally doesn't require mobility it does mean a bunch more stuff to transport if you're going to a mate's for a lan party or similar.
However, it does seem that a core i7-940xm will fit the same slot, (socket G1) but uses 55w TDP. is this ok to replace the i3-330m I currently have in the same motherboard? It's a 35w TDP which seems to be the only sticking point I can see as far as swapping out is concerned. Otherwise it's the previously mentioned i5-540/560/580, which are also 35w TDP.

Anyone?

It's a L50C-1XC, from the L500 family, it's a UK model. I've run CPU-Z, and found the specific laptop only on the UK-specific Toshiba website.

Hi by the way!

I've been doing some more research myself and have come to the conclusion that I'm not too bothered about the TDP issue mentioned above as I've recently modded the cooling anyway, and am going to get some better thermal paste and if worst comes to the worst I can maybe do some voltage mods, but any other info you can give would be much appreciated! Anything I've missed, BIOS-wise for instance

Sorry I've not got back to this sooner, it's been a hard few days at work...

**Addition**

Would I be better off getting another, non integrated motherboard? Currently I have integrated graphics but non integrated would widen my choice of central processor somewhat, plus it'd be better all round. Now, at this point, I realize many people are going to be screaming at me to just get a new laptop, but I'm never going to learn anything that way!! I just want to know I'm getting the right bits, which I'm sure are available somewhere or other. Essentially, being as most laptops are made to a specification, then it follows that there must be the correct specification of parts out there!?!
