Ok so I'm very new to even the concept of a VPN. I recently purchased Cisco VPN Client but have no idea how to configure it. I got it for what I believe to be geospoofing. I'm looking for more anonymity. I'm on a home network with a cable connection via wireless receiver. These are the fields in the configuration that i dont know what to input.

Connection entry:
Description:
Host:

Then I'm looking at choosing either group authentication or mutual group authentication or certificate authentication. I'm assuming i want the first option, so the fields needed here are

Name:
Password:

Do I choose these myself or is this for access to the wireless connection from my router?

Lastly, I have the option of enabling transparent tunneling, which if enabled I need to know if I want IPSec over UDP or TCP.

And there is a box to check below this for "allow local LAN access"

Any help would be extremely appreciated as Ive attempted to get this information on the net unsuccessfully and I am at my wits end! thanks in advance!

Who are you trying to connect to...? i.e. who is your VPN host?

You need to know the host name either but IP or host ID.
connection and description do not matter.

Use udp and check local lan access.

Thanks for helping me along my way, I don't know who my VPN host is. Does it have to be specific for my VPN or will any proxy do? I tried a few proxys from here --> http://www.hidemyass.com/proxy-list/ and I have it set to UDP and have checked allow local LAN access but I'm still getting the error message "Secure VPNConnection terminated locally by the Client." Any Idea where I can find a proxy that will work with these settings?

You don't need to VPN into a proxy. You would just input the proxy address into your browser. That's how public proxies work: your local PC sends and recieves traffic to/from the proxy and the proxy then communicates from the outside world. Thus it appears to the outside world you are originating from that proxy. It's what people in China do to get around censorship and Canadians do/used to do to access stuff that hadn't come to them yet like various music stream sites/netflix/hulu... Use a US proxy and Hulu thinks their coming in from a US IP instead of a Canadian one...

VPNs are something else. My employer for instance gave me a laptop with VPN software so I can login to the comany network from home with a special token device. So I'm securely connected to the company network from outside their firewall/routers. That's the power of VPNs: accessing a private network from the outside.

For consumer level stuff there's Hamachi and something I recently found: NeoRouter. In both cases you run software on say your desktop at home as well as your laptop. So when you go away for vacation or to starbucks you can connect to your home network and grab files/remote desktop/whatever. In my case I like to SSH into my linux servers at home and make progress on various things (while not opening a port).

In the context of what you have said so far I am a little confused as to why you purchased Cisco VPN software. What exactly are you trying to do?

Use a http proxy and be done with it.

I understand the whole thing with the proxy and my browser, but I was looking for anonymity with other programs. I occasionally download music via torrents and am looking to avoid any possible legal ramifications. I suppose if the VPN can't provide that I'll definitely return it as it was not cheap! Thanks again for the help.

I do 'buy stuff'. I just don't like getting ripped off, and if it's avoidable wouldn't it be silly not to? Shouldn't consumers be protected from being ripped off by knowing exactly what they are getting?

But then why would you buy something without knowing what it is, as you did here?

Anyway, you can try using something like Tor to download torrents.

It was pretty much an impulse buy and I made sure I could return it. Thanks for steering me towards Tor, looks more like what I was looking for.

Yeah, no reason for you to have that.

VPN's need a concentrator or host. Your router would need to support being a VPN host, or you would need other software/equipment (Cisco ASA).

Most VPN's are used by employees that need to reach internal corporate resources. I have a few in my lab with different vendors. Just need to get this dang Aruba one setup!

Like other have said, just hit the public proxy.
