im just not sure what to do -.-

my 939 rig is at a stopping point, i think i want to get a X2 4800 if i can find one at a good price, but i cant find a good onefor a good price

see i have a problem, when i build a machine, i start low, and end up the the best or next to best prcoessor for the board ( i liek to max out all my old machines as well) obviousely the fx 60 price just ultimately doesnt budge, so i figure, i could just buy the dual core version of my 3700 or better, ie, x2 4200/4600/4800

and i reaaallllli liek the specs of the 4800 (keep in mind i most likely will only do a moderate OC to max out the memorys potential.

my plan would be to upgrade the proc, keep everything, and then next year i think i might get a DXX10 card aroudn $300 to replace my 7800 gt

Any opinion are welcome

Check into some opty dual cores. They're basically the same thing as the X2's ~ though they all have 2x 1mb l2cache ~ and mostly cheaper.

Means it uses less power (will be cooler) for the same speed. Could potentially be a better overclocker.
Atleast I think theres two different power versions on that chip..

Edit: yea just checked AMD's site, theres a 110w and 89w version for socket 939, 65w/89w versions for socket AM2

Well an opteron is a good choice to think about ..Th Opteron 175 or 165 may be a thing to think about...Opteron 165 is one of the best overclocking 939 cpu's for Dual core.

Yea, I don't think I've seen many of even bad steppings get less than 2.4 to 2.6ghz.

I need some help with this. I may get an Opteron, because everyone says their good, but I think the X2s are great. My uncle has one, and it's lightning fast.

Opterons are more stable in general than an X2 especially when in an overclocked environment. The Opteron 165 is a great CPU and is cheap and offers you the feature of great multitasking also as its dual core and has a total of 2mb cache. This CPU with the correct stepping can hit 3ghz

AMD Opteron 175 Denmark 2.2GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model OSA175CDBOX - Retail for a bit under $250

AMD Opteron 165 Denmark 1.8GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model OSA165CDBOX - Retail But id apparently have to OC the heck out of it to make it where id liek it. (cheaper only $165)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+(89W) Toledo 2.2GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model ADV4400CDBOX - Retail on paper looks liek 2 3700 sandisalso at $250

AMD Opteron 175 Denmark 2.2GHz Socket 939 Dual Core Processor Model OSA175CDBOX - Retail this on paper looks just as good as 2 3700's as well also $250

the opteron 180 is at 299 and 2.4 ghz, and then x2 4800 i found going for 265 but OEM =/

Why not an Opteron 170? Cheaper than the 175 and a better buy than the 165 (in my opinion). Most of the CPUs you quoted will OC to about the same, with the exception that if you get a good stepping you may be able to go higher. Out of all the options you have, all are worth getting, except maybe the 165 (as far as comparative OC potential). Go for a cheap, high multiplier CPU.

I agree. Better get the Opty. If I had access in my country, I would have.

Another vote for the Opty 170. With the recent price slashes AMD did across the board to the Opty 939 series, very shortly you should be able to pick up a 170 for well less than $200. With a very mild OC, you'll get teh performance you want with no trouble, and for super cheap. I have yet to see even the worst OCing dual core Opty not hit at least 2.6GHz easily and rock solid stable.
