ATI wants to diminish the list of supported graphics cards in the next release of Catalyst. With the release of ATI Catalyst 9.4, the plan is to exclude support for Radeon 9500, 9600, 9800, X800, X1800, X1900 and other desktop video cards. Catalyst 9.4 will also lack support for the FireGL X1/X2/X3, V3000, V5000, V7000 and FireMV 2200, 2250 professional cards. Of course owners of these models will still be permitted to download older drivers and use them happily. The ATI Catalyst 9.4 is set to be released next month.

They should've started this a long time ago.

Optimize the separate family of video cards on its own... 4800 should have its own drivers, 3800.... and so on. Bundling everything together really limits the optimization.

And after 6 years, the cards should already be optimized to the max.
I thought it would be only for the Linux version....

I agree with everything except the X and above series cards....they aren't that old. The others though are older than dirt now but it's all good as long as they can still find a catalyst suite that will work for those cards in the future.

Sounds good, but they should get rid of the WoW trial, too. Yes, I know you can custom install without it, but it just bugs me that they try to force it upon you like that.
Maybe it'll make the drivers a little less intensely bulky now. But i do hope that they support them in Win7.

Good to hear they are dropping support for older gen stuff. Now they can put that concentration on the newer stuff and maybe get it right more often.
Let's just hope they'll work on XP x64 this time..
My trusty 9600s and 9800 are still around here somewhere, but it doesn't matter if support ends; those cards weren't gaining anything from the new versions anyway I believe.
they are dropping X1XXX series support too soon
ahh ok mhmmm, yep, yeah yeah, ahhh very nice. OK! right, gotcha, crystal clear.

WHERE THE HELL IS SIDEPORT!?
It's possible that ATI had already stopped driver maintenance for the X1 series a long time ago, and it's only now that they're publicizing it. When was the last time the driver changelog mentioned that series?

They already said that they won't be adding sideport because it produces so much heat for a tiny gain in performance. I wish they did add it and make it a feature that you can turn off and on by yourself. My brother has 2x 4870x2s and has them under water cooling and the additional heat wouldn't be much off a problem.

Good move though, since they will be focusing more on the newer cards.

Your sideport is not enabled yet?
xlastshotx is, ATI said that only the reference boards would have the ability for sideport.
They also said that current AA rendering methods would not benefit from the sideport.
