ATI's official partner Sapphire Technology is showcasing a new type of video card cooling at CeBIT 2009. The VGA heatsink incorporates Vapour Chamber technology and will be featured on some of the Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 video cards to come. The Vapour Chamber technology is a rather new kind of cooling technology for video cards, and until now it was used only by ASUS. In essence, it is very similar to the heat-pipe technology we've seen plenty of times before, taking heat and transferring it away from its source to a cooler area. However, in the Vapour Chamber technology the cooling effect is achieved not by a gass, but by a vacuum chamber. The heatsink occupies two PCI slots, and also features a big fan on top. Unfortunately, that's all the information we have for now.

I actually kind of like it. I'll wait to see how reliable they are in the long term though.
This new VCT stuff is pretty interesting i wanna see some benches though comparing standard heat pipes to this stuff.

And at least it looks better than the Asus F1 formula card cooler...
It looks good. Get some red on there for the ATI colour scheme and it's good to go.

You beat me to it. Thats the first thing I thought when I looked at it. It does look better, but not by much

How much cooler would a card with vapor cooling run?

Cooler doesn't look that horrible. At least its not a brick like the 295...

Or as a 'tape recorder' as some people described it.

Who cares how it looks, I wanna know how well it cools.
How much it this going to cost? I would rather have heatpipes if it will be considerably cheaper, or even just a little copper and some aluminum.
What exactly does "Vapour Chamber" do? Does is remove/transfer heat away as good as or better than a good'ol copper HSF?
Ahhh I'd have so taken one of these it there were out sooner!

I'm just a tad confused:
Haven't Sapphire already featured the Vapor-X "Vapour Chamber Technology" on their last few series of Toxic (and Atomic) cards?

Toxic 4870 with VCT
Toxic 3870 with VCT
and
3870 Atomic with Vapor-X *

(IMHO those cards ALL look better than this new "sleek" packaging!
Cheers

( *let's all momentarily "forget" we ever saw the Sapphire Atomic 4870x2 "water cooled" abomination)
