Trade in my computer?

2502 Views 34 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  killerxx7
So this all started when i decided to run a dual moniter setup, and found out i had to upgrade my graphics card and blah blah blah... I think i just want a new computer.

Right now i have a hp m8330f (i think the specs are in my sig) and im thinking of getting something along the lines of a E9270F... what do you guys think? Core i7, 8gb of ddr3 ram, TB hd, all for about $1000. I can probably sell my current setup for at least 800 bucks. and then spend another 600 or so on 2 moniters and peripherals. So my out of pocket cost for a badass setup would be about 800 bucks.

I know this is a high-performance computer website, but i dont know of any other computer sites.

Thanks!

you can build a better computer for the price.

def would be nice though.

Give us a price range and we'll build a computer for you. Much better to build it yourself than buying prebuilt.

i would guess his range is around $1000 since that is what he was looking at.

Good luck finding a sucker i mean customer to buy that for $800...

The only thing that loses its value faster than computers are used computers.

Pretty much sums it up.

But as stated above...your best bet is to sell what you have for as much as you can ASAP, put that cash towards a new build, you'll come out ahead in the long run.

Build it yourself dude, I bought a high-end HP a long time ago and ended up regretting it.

Here:

Under 1k and definitely a MUCH better system than that crap HP you are thinking about.

im kinda worried about building my own computer, i dont want to spend that much money and **** everything up. I know all the basic parts (hd's cpu's gpu's mobo's ram, power supply, etc...) and what they do and where they go, but stuff like fsb, and adjusting voltage, and compatability, and all that. Maybe a barebones is better for me?

All that i know i want if i build my own, is something fast (I dont really game that much, well, not super graphic intensive games) and something with a ssd with the os on it (my friend had this on his computer, and it started up quick as ****, my computer takes like half an hour).

if you know the basics you are fine. just don't forget the mobo standoffs. :p

and the build speced out above would be very fast. SSD's are way expensive but they are wicked fast, if you can afford one get one.

You don't need to mess with FSB and voltage and such unless you overclock, which we can help you with in the future. It is really easy to put a computer together, just search the forum for a guide and you're all set.

Slothfish speaks the truth. All you need to do is make sure everything in your BIOS is set to "auto" and you should be fine. You won't be maximizing performance or temperatures by any means, but it prevents you from needing to tweak stuff. And if you're feeling adventurous, you can always give it a try later.

Another good resource for "how-to" is Youtube. There are lots of videos out there which are quite helpful.

You don't need any special tools or anything. Just a screwdriver, an afternoon, a space to spread out a little bit, and a 6 pack of your favorite beer.

thanks a lot guys, you helped a lot! heres a build i put together with my bosses help.

waddya guys think? Its a little over my budget, but i dont care. i want a badass computer

you have two PSU's listed, but either one would work.

also, you do not have a CPU in that list. for that motherboard you would need an AM3 socket AMD processor. for your price range i would want to go I7, but if you game more than work then AM3 is a good choice, but you should save money elsewere and get better graphics cards.
EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512-P3-N871-AR Video Card$134.99

SONY Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive Model DDU1681S-0B$18.99

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 1-Pack for System Builders $104.99

Antec Nine Hundred Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window $99.99

OCZ Vertex Series OCZSSD2-1VTX30G 2.5" MLC Internal Solid state disk (SSD) $119.99

Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive -Bare Drive $79.99

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory and CORSAIR CMPSU-650HX 650W Power Supply $367.49

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor and ASUS M4A79XTD EVO ATX AMD Motherboard $230.98

Grand Total:$1,127.41

hopefully that fixes it, changed a couple things and saved 100 bucks. (new cpu and mobo bundle 955 cpu v 965, i can oc for the .2 more Ghz if i need to) also downgraded to a 750gb hard drive.

looks awesome

I would spring an extra $100 for better graphics card, but that is all up to you. can always upgrade later.

edit:

something like this would even be awesome:

only $70 more.

Get the 5750 instead of the 9800GTX+. It is faster, has much lower power consumption, generally overclocks higher, is DX11 capable, and only costs a few bucks more.

With a $1200 budget there is no reason to not get an i7 system. The 920 blows the AMD 955 out of the water clock-for-clock, and I have never seen a 920 D0 that can't reach 4ghz on air.

Keep in mind I've got both an AMD 965 system and the i7 rig in my signature. I am absolutely in love with the AMD, but if you've got that kind of budget you should really go i7.

Dude do you actually NEED to get dominators for RAM? go for something cheaper and then get a better GPU
True, try building an i7 system, like was said before there is no reason you should not go i7 for $1200. It would dominate your current build, not speaking from a fanboys perspective, but a best-bang-for-buck/enthusiast perspective. Also, ditch the SUPER expensive ram, you dont need 8gb for anything, 6gb will suffice. Take the $$$ saved from value ram(gskill, or mid-ranged companies) and get a better GPU to complement the i7. Easy.

Goodluck.

Try youtubing videos of DIY computer assembly. Best way to actually learn!
800 bucks for the PC in your sig? im thinking more like 500 at the most

Your GPU's power doesn't match with your CPU. I'd get a 4870 or GTX 260 216SP at the least if you want the PII. If you can afford so, I'd recommend the GTX 275 (the HD5000 series are still a bit too expensive for my taste, even if they do perform well).

Also, I'm not too sure you need 8GB of RAM. It's cool to have, but probably won't be used and would be a waste of money. You're better off getting 4GB and putting the extra $100 to a better graphics card. Additionally, you might not need Dominators; damn overpriced model in my opinion. You're better off getting G.Skills for cheaper, and they still overclock extremely well.

Additionally, I'd also plan on a good heatsink if you plan to overclock. The Xigmatek Dark Knight would be a good air cooler to start off with.

That's all I have to say about the build
