troble setting up a wireless router

i got a wireless g router from a friend, and i having problems seting it up. The laptop i'm using finds it and say its connected but, if I try to get on the net, vista say the is a problem and can't fix it????

what model router? what model modem is connected to it? have you reset the router to default?

if you open a command prompt [start, run, type "cmd" and hit enter]
and run "ipconfig /all" what does it report after vista tells you it can't repair it?
