Hey - It's my first post, so go easy on me! I've searched through the forum but couldn't find anyone with a similar problem, so here goes...

I've just bought a Sapphire Ultimate X800GTO (silent series). This card comes with the R480 core. I'm using ATITool 0.24 and I am trying to overclock, but it's just not half the result I was expecting. I can only get to Core - 450 / 570 - Mem before artefacts start visibly showing in the test window. (Yellow squares if I push the core, yellow triangles if I push the memory).

I have been reading folk getting 550 on the core easily! As far as I can tell, everything is in order. I'm using the newest Catalyst and the temp goes up to 55C when running tests.

Is this the lamest overclock ever? Anybody got any ideas on how I can push the card further, or am I stuck with it?

Hi, I have the Sapphire X800GTO. Only recently I've been able to OC it to 560core/542mem. This was done with Cat version 5.8. I had similar problems when using cat version 6.1. I was getting 475core/535mem when using the newest (6.1) version. Just downgrade to 5.8 and you should see an improvement.

Like bluedevil said, the silent gto isn't a great OC'er due its terrible fan speed, but you should still still quite a noticable rise in your core speed.

I'll downgrade and see what happens - thank you very much!

Just downgraded, but it still won't let me go higher!

Well I guess I'm stuck with it...

Thanks again for the help!

the "silent series" use passive coolers(no fans) and really shouldn't be overclocked, but if you replace the cooler like the post above^ with say a Zalman 700 you shouldn't have an issue with overclocking, and the Zalman is really quiet too. One thing, if your core is an r430 instead of an r480 or r423 the core will never overclock much, the r430 tops out at around 450mhz even with better cooling and vmods.
