Trouble with EasyBCD, XP and W7

I have been running a dual boot XP/W7 Pro 64 bit. XP was installed first on a 200 gb partition on the caviar blue, W7 went on another 200 gb on the blue. I had to reinstall XP since it was locking up intermittently. I reformatted the XP partition and reinstalled XP. Now to get the Windows boot menu back i am attempting to follow these instructions, picking it up at When Windows 7 is Installed First Step 7: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...General%20Tips

I have dot net 2.0 thru 3.5 installed courtesy of VS 2008 and i installed Easy BCD 2.0 beta.
Problem is that i get the error The boot configuration data store could not be opened. System could find the file specified. Would like to manually load aBCD entry for Easy BCD to manage?

What do i need to do to get EasyBCD working so i can use it to add back the boot menu?

The XP bootloader is oblivious to anthing else installed on your computer... if installed second for any reason, it will destroy any startup config you had. Whenever these kinds of problems came up, i just booted from my win 7 install disk, and ran the "check for errors that are keeping windows from starting up" diagnositcs. Then easyBCD to get xp and 7 dual-booting again.

I dunno if this will help

As a rule install the oldest OS first, Newest last.

1: XP uses a different bootloader than Vista/Windows7.

2: Vista/Win7 will not boot from the Xp bootloader.

3: When you re-installed Xp it overwrote / "nuked" the Win7 bootloader, hence EasyBCD is confused.

To fix:

1:Within EasyBCD is a option to re-install the Vista bootloader. You could try that.
2: Another option is to cold boot the machine with the Win7 disc/bootable usb stick in and run Win7 setup again and pick repair. It will scan the machine for MS OS's, create a Win7 bootloader and add from OS's to the bootloader.
(Time to do repair scan/fix mbr less than 5 mins.)

Once you are up and running use EasyBCD to *edit the name of OS's that show at boot time. /order of boot, etc.
(It will Win7 "recovered") in the bootmanager listing after using the repair option.
