TV for PS3, 1080p vs 720p

Hey guys. I plan on getting a ps3 and want a new lcd. I could easily get an adapter and play it using my computer monitor, but I want something I can hook my ps2 up to as well. I want a 32 inch since I go to college and want something affordable and lightweight. I plan to use ps3 via hdmi. My dilemma is should I get a 720p or a 1080p tv? Is there a noticeable difference? After doing some research I hear 1080p is not worth it unless you have a tv that is 40 inches or above. Also most games don't look that great on 1080p because they are 720p native. So what should it be, a 1080p or a 720p 32in tv for ps3?

720P is great & enough
You won't notice a difference on a 32" what ever its resolution was
For PS3, 720p is all you need. If you ever plan on using it as a computer monitor you'll want 1080p.
Yep. On a 32" 720p looks great. Anything higher I would definitely go 1080p.
Thanks for the replies. I have a 22in lcd computer monitor and my gtx 260 came with a dvi to hdmi adapter, so I could use that if I wanted to hook my ps3 to my computer monitor, which doesn't have a direct hdmi input. If any one has comparisons between ps3 1080p and 720p please link or send.
Really depends how far back your sitting, if your using it like a monitor and sitting <4 feet away than 1080p will be noticable. If your using it like a TV.. than no, it won't be noticable on that size.
i have my ps3 connected to a 32 in samsung 720p via HDMI
and it beautiful
anything larger that 32 in 1080 is the way to go

If you want to watch Blu Ray movies as well as game, go for a 1080P. There's a few PS3 games that are 1080i but Blu Rays are stellar. If you can afford to that's my 2 cents.

People are also forgetting games vs. movies.
Are you only going to use your PS3 for gaming, or will you also watch Blu-Ray movies on it? Because very few games run at full 1080p, but Blu-Ray movies do run at 1080p. So, if you will just use it for gaming, then 720p will be sufficient. But if you will watch Blu-Ray movies as well and you want to be able to watch them in 1080p, then you should get a 1080p TV (but if 720p is good enough for you, then a 720p TV would suffice).

[EDIT] Hivemind... Clox just beat me to it

I'm sure that over 90% of the time I will be gaming with it, and only renting blue ray movies when I want to watch one. From the replies it seems 720p is sufficient, and at my Target there is a deal for a westinghouse 32in 720p for $246. That's a very good deal, so I plan on checking out this tv.

If it's just a 32" TV, then 720p is fine, plus there are some GREAT deals on them now.
As said, most games aren't 1080p anyway (and a lot aren't even rendered in HD as it is).

Just got a Toshiba as bro's Xmas gift: $340 shipped from Newegg (it's $380 now, but still a good deal)

AAARGH! Wish I woulda checked in on this forum sooner. Me and the wife were originally going to purchase this same westinghouse from target or an emerson from walmart... But on the morning of Black Friday I woke up and decided to google the model numbers of both.

The majority of reviews were horrendous and multiple reviews stated issues where shortly after warranty ran out the tv power would go out, or wouldnt display properly etc etc, they also went on to state how expensive the repairs were and the lack of customer service support.

It wasn't just one or two bad reviews either, it was a LARGE amount of bad reviews mixed in with the good reviews of people who had it a week or so.

We ended up targeting a 32" Samsung or a 32" Sony Bravia that was for 377-378. We picked up the Bravia from Best Buy and the wife has been pretty happy with it. At first she didn't like the idea of the uptick in cost... but I convinced her it was better than taking the chance of having to purchase a new HDTV in a year or so at 250 or greater cost. Plus I have owned quite a few Sony tv's in the past, although they aren't the best anymore they are still fairly good quality.

I am sure there might be some other good brands and tv offers still going on atm and someone might be able to point those out but at least wanted to state what I saw regarding the TV you mentioned.

You can notice a difference if you are sitting close to the TV. But as long as you are at a normal viewing distance, it won't make a difference. And as others have said, few games run above 720p.
Definitely 32" @ 720p is enough for a console.

I have a 32" that does 2560*1600 and I had both an Xbox 360 and a PS3 hooked up to it before through an HDMI cable. Basically between 720p and 1080p, I tried both because I was told to use 720p instead of 1080p because it would look better, yet I didn't see a difference.
