If it is the first option, you should be able to run them together, you'll just have to run them at the speed of the slower stick (or risk overclocking the other one) and you may have to set the timings manually. But they are probably close enough to the same settings that it'll work fine right out of the box. There's nothing magical about matched sets, except that they have the same timings and SPD info.
If it is the second, just run the 2x4GB kit and sell the 8GB stick.
If you have two 2x4GB kits (so 4 sticks and 16GB total) then they will work just fine together. But you'd still probably better off just selling one of the kits, since 16GB is overkill for most rigs.
