Two SATA drives without a RAID?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if it was possible to setup two SATA drives without using a RAID.

Ive been looking around in my BIOS all day and i can't seem to find anything that looks like it will help me.

Im used to the old master/slave stuff so this is all new to me

No, the HDD isn't broken. Device manager and the BIOS recognize that it is there.

Ive also messed around with the HDD boot priority but that still does't seem to do anything.

Is there a way to setup two sata HDD without a RAID?

Yes.

Just plug in the second hard drive and it should recognise it.

You just have one drive that is your Operating system drive and the other drive you just access in " My Computer" or "Computer" if you are running Vista. You just need to format the extra drive to NTFS default settings.
Hmm, ok.

I'm running windows 7.

I guess i should have said this. The other HDD isn't showing up in the "My computer" window.
Put your system specs in your user control panel and it helps people help you.
make sure the sata cable is connected well and also its power cable. Look at your motherboard guide to see if it has a preference to which SATA port it likes for your second drive. Usually PORT 2 is fine

You need to format and label it under Storage Manager.

Goto Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management. It will pop up a screen that says you need to initialize the disk, do this then you can format the drive. This will then be visible in Explorer.

install, init, partition, format, access
Went to "Computer management" and initialized the drive.

But under the "Volume" collum it gives me only one thing i can format. This "system reserved" thing which is located on the (C
drive

However, there is a HDD listed as Disk 1 and it says Unallocated. Im sure this is the seccond HDD but it doesn't give me an option to format it.

Anyone have any ideas?

In that window, right click the unallocated space and click "Create Volume", it will lead you through some steps to name it and etc. do Quick Format.

Right click on the unallocated space.

Right mouse on the Unallocated partition then you have an option to format.
You can't format it because there is no partition. I'm not sure exactly what it says since I haven't had the need to do it in a while but it should say something like make new partition if you right click on the unallocated.
you could download and burn gparted onto a disc.. then boot the live cd-rom and see if the drive shows up there and then you could format it..

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

edit
Ah yeah also I didn't read the second part you have to create a volume of the unallocated space and then format it..
Ahh, finally figured it out

Wording on Windows 7 was abit different and ive never dones this before so it was abit confusing =)

Thanks for all your help guys!
