Hi I'm about to order the dell mini 12. Can someone answer some simple questions?

can it view the following files:

a, pdf
b, powerpoint (old and 2007)

In addition, how does it handle embedded javascript in firefox? I feel paranoid for asking but I fear something weird may happen when I browse school website with tons of awkward script under ubuntu.

Definately yes on PDF files (you can even create them by printing to file).
Not so sure about Powerpoint, although Excel and Word are a yes (it can create those too).
Firefox should handle Javascript - I haven't come across a website that doesn't work under it. But why speculate? Download Virtualbox onto your rig, then install Ubuntu onto it using the ISO! Or even better, use Ubuntu as a liveCD (you don't have to install it to use it - you can boot to the desktop without it touching your hard drive)

i've already searched online regarding those questions but wanted user confirm, so appreciate that. From all the youtube vids i'm thinking of ubuntuing my comp right now without virtualbox, since my gaming rig will be on other comp.

yes, via evince, and yes, via openoffice

web pages display fine as well. just make sure you install flash etc and you're good. the repositories are your friend

I'm fairly sure you can run office through wine. Not 100% sure though.

OpenOffice ftw

You can use it to save to Office formats too. I wonder if a netbook would handle the hog that is MS Office very well. Maybe an earlier version.

Of course, I forgot about Openoffice somehow! Openoffice is effectively, just MS Office rebadged (in terms of functionality)

Edit: Try to steer clear of Wine if you can - it's a bit of a resource hog for a netbook, especially considering the wealth of open-source, native apps that will almost certainly do the same job. As Iceblade said, the repositories (in Ubuntu, you access them via Synaptic) are your friend. If you want software, leave Google alone, and search for it in Synaptic
