Ubuntu 9.x Random Hard Locks...

This is on both 9.10 (unupdated - Freezes too often for my internet to finish the downloads), and a fully updated (not unupdated!) 9.04.

Hardware used:
My sig rig, only thing not listed of any real significance is a Belkin wireless n card running with ndiswrappered drivers, but I'm pretty sure that's not a problem, as it's been fine before.

Dell GX260, or something like it.
2.4Ghz Pentium 4
512MB DDR333
Intel IGP
20GB IDE drive (for Linux.)

To make things a little clearer: 9.04 doesn't crash when un-updated, 9.10 locks up too often for me to fully update.

Info about the crash/lockup: Seems that a lot of people have been having this problem, with mixed fixes, if any. Sometimes the mouse can move, sometimes not. Sometimes you can SSH into the affected computer and even once I saw an instance where someone was able to restart X via SSH and that fixed it (per lock-up, not forever). There is no error message, just a total lockup. I've had it occur anywhere from typing, to moving something, to idling and downloading files, to playing with Compiz, to changing settings....

Alt + sysreq + REISUB works as normal, but ctrl + alt + backspace doesn't (yes, I enabled it). I know a fair amount about linux - I'm no guru, but I know my way around the OS fairly well, and not just Ubuntu's GUI, I'm just as competent with the CLI, but again...No guru here.

For now I'm going to switch the Dell back to 8.04, as stability is important for that computer, and will continue to try and squash this thing on my rig. Help is very appreciated

Thanks in advance OCN

Change out the CPU, RAM and mobo until you find out which one is causing the problem. Same as for any other mystery hardware issues.

Sounds like you are a reinstall hitch, maybe try another distro just in case or download 8.04 LTS and go from there.

This is my advice too but I'm a newish to linux. I'd certainly look at software before hardware problems. Maybe pop in a live disk and run memtest for a few hours.

It sounds like it's just X locking up. I've heard of this before, and it's a bug in the kernel itself that happens with only certain setups. Does (Alt+)SysRq+R and then ctrl+alt+f1 switch you to a new terminal?

I had an old computer running Ubuntu that would lock up because of a wireless card. I would take out any unnecessary components and test one by one until you figure out with peripheral is causing the lock up.

I'm going to have to borrow DDR3..and I've got no friends running AM3, nor do I have extra parts...I'll have to see what I can do.

Already downloaded 8.04, installing it on the Dell tonight, mention that in OP IIRC.

Going to try and lock it up now. Will tell you if it works.

yeah, tried that anyway and it didn't work

Edit 2: Locked it by just opening some applications and playing with compiz (not the problem afaik, as the Dell doesn't have it enabled.)....Alt + SYSREQ + R, then alt+ctrl+1 didn't do anything, but REISUB worked normally. I'm assuming this means the kernel did hang, and it wasn't just X.

No... if you're able to do the "Raising Skinny Elephants Is Utterly Boring" (RSEIUB or REISUB), then it's not the kernel locking up (otherwise known as a kernel panic).
One of the easiest ways to see if it's the kernel panicing is by looking at your caps and scroll lock keys. If they're blinking, the kernel paniced (and I don't think that's the case here)

I want you to try something else though. I assume you're running 9.10 which according to you, is the easiest one to lock up. Try switching to a separate terminal and do your stuff there. Kill X as one of the first things by doing:

Code:

Code:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Then, try updating your system (of course if it's already updated it's pointless to install this):

Code:

Code:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

Can't believe I didn't think of that -.-

Tried it, and it seems to work do far - I'll bug you guys more if it acts up again

Thanks a ton - I needed Ubuntu to hold my "tinker with linux" need over until Xmas break when I'll have the time to work with Arch.
