Greetings from Madison, WI!

We are planning on building a Mini Home IMAX theater using the methods shown here: http://nthusim.com/setup/bhawthorne-...lar-projection however, with more of a 'dome' design. Our goal is to do this sometime by the end of Summer 2011.

What I am calling upon from the OCN Audiophile community is a 'no-holds-barred' unlimited budget surround sound system AND surround headphone system (for when the kids and wife are asleep).

What I need from you: suggestions!

-Receivers
-Amps
-Speakers
-Subs
-5.1? 7.1? Higher?
-Brands?
-Command Modules/Remotes
-System Usage Feedback Monitoring
-Power requirements
-Anything that I may be missing here (I'm sure there's a lot)

This will be a quite grandiose setup and, if possible, not have to upgrade for quite sometime. Thank you all in advance!

Another thing, just because the budget is unlimited, that doesn't mean that we're going to spend it on high-dollar components. I guess the question would be, what's the best quality that justifies the cost?

If your going for that full cinema feel

JBL CINAMA ARRAY price HERE INFO
as for amps JBL pairs great with crown or QSC
I would say you would spend about 12 to 15 k with a stereo setup and another 5 to add surround.

Depending on how many amps it takes running a tri amp system you would be looking at about 50A on a 220 or 3 110s to be safe. Im not knowledgeable with surround possessing in large format systems but i would just get a small mixer with left/right mono and 4 monitor outputs and take a 5.1 from a pc and send center, rear left and rear right to the monitors and then to the surround amps. Use mono for the subs and l/r for mains. IDK just my guess.

Thanks for the input, Darth. That actually coincides with what IMAX uses for their sound system: http://www.in70mm.com/newsletter/199...ound/index.htm Though, that link is 14 years old, it's kind of a reference point.

This is sure to be of epic proportions. You must show us pictures when you get this up and running. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge about ultra high end equipment. Best of luck.

Nope. No pictures, we'll be keeping all of this to ourselves.

Ya you cant go wrong with JBL's. I love the ones i have. 14 years is nothing the ones i run are at about 50 and are still better than a lot of the stuff out there today. The only real change is the recording median. O and as for upgrades. You would never have to they would last forever if you treat them well. I use the saying "A good speaker is good forever." At most surround replacements in 20 years.

Anyway good luck on this. Sounds like a large project.

Greetings from another Madison resident
. Now first thing to determine is your main focus. You can spend a lot on 2 main speakers, this is usually the best option if you're focusing on 2ch music. If you're looking for more of a "surround experience" for movies then there are different avenues I would follow.

And, if you can provide a more concrete bottom line it would be pretty helpful - I could probably spend any amount of money you came up with
.

Edit: Oh and what do you mean by headphone surround system? Headphones for everybody watching the movie?

For a project such as this you really should be getting some professional home theater installers involved. They'll be able to recommend the best equipment for your requirements and budget, draw up plans and get the whole lot set up in the best way possible.

You'll also want to add acoustic room treatment to your list, when spending such a great amount on a setup it would be a crime not to treat the room for the best sound possible.

That's true to a point, although you must be wary of what they will try to push on you. Calibrating a system for a certain room is quite an undertaking, necessitating precise microphone measurements of frequency responses. An inch right or left in speaker placement can make a surprising difference in the sound you will hear. That said, it definitely can be done without the added cost of a professional - and it's a great learning experience that I wouldn't want to pass up personally.
