unlucky video card problem again! 4670

1822 Views 38 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  SLeeZeY
I've got a ATI Radeon FORCE3D 4670 512MB in sig rig and I believe its randomly cutting out. When it does, my pc locks up for 10 seconds or so, the monitor goes black, but my music or game still continues to play in the background. Now my typical card temperature is 45 degrees C, Lord knows how high it gets when I'm playing games. However the black outs don't just happen when I play games, but even when I am browsing the net or listening to music, at any time really. I've got two fans already installed and have recently dusted off the inside of my case but it still doesn't work.

My card is not over clocked nor does any other part of my pc overheat. ive got 8.11 drivers, lastest thing ive installed was the UAA microsoft HD sound that came with the card i think..

Does anyone have any ideas? i might just RMA it to the store i bought it from, they would give a direct replacement but with it cutting off randomly it would be hard for them to tell =/

My card idles at 32*C usually, around your temps ingame
blackouts sound like chronic overheating to me.

Yours has the teeny tiny fan though. Have you tried reseating the HS or directing a bit more air in its direction, I have 2x80mm blowing towards mine and ramsinks on the back with an 80mm pulling heat off the card and NB.

Put the 9.2 drivers on, they got me a good 4 - 5fps increase in Warhead and Far Cry 2, so I consider them stable.

ey sleezy, ive got 1 80mm fan blowing air inwards its right next to the card, and ive taken out the metal cover for the slot next to the PCIE, and of course the fan of the card, im guessing it is overheating issue. but ive got another fan blowing all the air out..

this is the format of my air flow, thing is i only have 1 fan blowing air out and 1 fan blowing air in. (usually 2 slots for fans at the back right? well ive got 1 fan most farthest from the VC blowing air out. ) should i get another fan to blow air out?

btw how do i update my drivers?
step by step

Download drivers from ATI . Uninstall the old drivers and catalyst software completely. Restart your machine. Install new drivers. Restart if prompted.

mmm do drivers really help lower the temp? how can i increase the fan and also, ive left the side cover panel open soo theres alot of air, hopefully will cool things down
just reinstall your drivers.

uninstall, go to safe mode, use driver cleaner, run it. then restart, install latest catalyst drivers (cat 9.2) then you're good to go.

in catalyst, and you can find everything in the overdrive section

cheers
Good software will make the GPU more efficient in what its doing, how much and when.

GPU's can change temps almost instantly. Just be glad we're too poor for GTX's and X2's, they can cook bacon.

edit: go through the Club 4670 link in my sig, the drivers are linked there.
will do, is 9.2 also 8.12? in the ati overdrive section there isnt a way to control the fan on the GPU.

what ive done right now is taken off the side panel and now its just open air, i think its temporary solution but hey it should work, now all the fans are blowing air out.

i will update if its still blacking out and stuff, really this is an annoying problem

going to upgrade the drivers in a bit also,

lol, mine can probably boil water, haha, thanks for the driver cleaner.

soo, uninstall, safe mode, driver cleaner, install new drivers,

why cant i jst install over the current drivers?
As much as everyone want it to be overheating I am gonna say the monitor is dying. Test it with a tv or another moniter. If you wanna go buy another moniter from best buy and it keeps doing the blackout then return it and say you dint like it that much.

People like to be thorough, although, I usually just install over the top of the old ones unless I'm installing a new card, but if its just updates for what I already have I don't bother

Drivers are finicky when you try to install over it sometimes. Not worth the trouble later on.
Temperatures look good (these things can take like 100C).
Sure its the video card? Maybe monitor? New software incompatibilities? Might even be a virus.

monitor is fine, its an LCD TV, so cable is alright and my video card history is like this
1, msi 4670
2, ati x300, because msi went rma
3.u force3d 4670

this problem never happened with the last two cards, although the msi did die and is rma as of now

i thought it could be a virus BUT everything is still running when there's no display, i can still hear the sounds through the speakers when i'm listening to music or watching a video. i try turning the monitor on and off and still nothing, but after a reset of the computer its fine.

Some cards don't have fan control support. How about you ALT-TAB out of a game you have been running for a while and check the temperature in CCC?

Has it crashed yet with the new driver?
