So my sig rig (ASUS X79 Sabertooth, 3930k, Patriot Extreme Masters 4x 8GB 1866MHz, 10- 11-10-30) is not stable through 6 hours of AIDA64 in any combination of settings and voltages.

No matter what I try it produces a BSOD with error code 0xD1. At extremely high VTT/VCCSA voltages (1.35v, 1.4v) it will sometimes BSOD with 0x124.

If you can help me get stable I will worship you forever. If you can even help figure out which component is crapping out on me I'd be extremely grateful.

Here's a sampling of settings I've tried (al failed), from least to most agressive:

1. Underclocked RAM
CPU multi: 38
Load vcore: 1.28v
RAM clock: 1600MHz @ 10-11-10-30-3T
VTT: 1.25v
VCCSA: 1.25v
DIGI+ VRM: all auto

2. Underclocked RAM
CPU multi: 38
Load vcore: 1.28v
RAM clock: 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24-1T (JEDEC/SPD rating)
VTT: 1.25v
VCCSA: 1.25v
DIGI+ VRM: all auto

3. Stock XMP
CPU multi: 38
Load vcore: 1.28v
RAM clock: 1866MHz @ 10-11-10-30-3T (XMP rating)
VTT: 1.05v
VCCSA: 0.95v
DIGI+ VRM: all auto

4. Stock XMP more voltage
CPU multi: 38
Load vcore: 1.28v
RAM clock: 1866MHz @ 10-11-10-30-3T (XMP rating)
VTT: 1.2v
VCCSA: 1.15v
DIGI+ VRM: all auto

5. Stock XMP even more voltage
CPU multi: 38
Load vcore: 1.28v
RAM clock: 1866MHz @ 10-11-10-30-3T (XMP rating)
VTT: 1.25v
VCCSA: 1.25v
DIGI+ VRM: increased load limits and stuff for RAM/VTT/VCCSA

6. various OC's
CPU multi: 44/45/46/47
Load vcore: 1.4v - 1.42v
RAM clock: 1866MHz @ 10-11-10-30-3T / 11-11-11-34-3T / 12-12-12-36-3T
VTT: 1.2v through 1.4v in 0.05v steps
VCCSA: 1.15v through 1.4v in 0.05v steps
DIGI+ VRM: More or less everything maxed out except no manual switching frequencies set

All 4 sticks passed Memtest simultaneously at XMP profile and 1.2v VTT and 1.15v VCCSA, but I haven't tested each stick separately. Forgot to put that in the OP.

MB supports 64GB of RAM and has 8 slots, so it must support 8GB sticks....

Patriot's memory configurator also lists these sticks as compatible with the board.

For starters I would think it is almost certainly RAM related.

As someone has already suggested I would be testing each stick individually but before you do a couple of things:

I see no mention of DRAM voltage. Your RAM requires 1.5v so i would set your overclocking mode to manual (not XMP) and make sure your DRAM voltage is manually set to 1.5v.

Secondly if I recall correctly you shouldn't really be setting either your VTT or VCCSA voltage above 1.2v. Certainly not required to be set above this for the modest overclock you are trying to achieve. On the Rampage extreme most people don't use above 1.2v for 4.8ghz and a modest RAM overclock. To be sure you are getting enough voltage for now I would set to 1.2v as this is plenty and you can then start to lower these once you have found your issue.

Once the above criteria is met I would test your system. If the fault persists I would then move on to checking your system with one stick of RAM at a time until you find which stick is causing the problem. If the you still get the same BSOD with every stick then you may be looking at a board or CPU issue.

Also check how your cooler is attached to the CPU socket. Over tightening these or uneven pressure can lead to RAM issues.

I'm sure I'm teaching you how to suck eggs with this one but just making sure the RAM is properly located is worth checking. Happens to the best of us.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that all your DIGI+ plus stuff can be left on auto but you may want to use some low/medium LLc for the CPU.

Also just thinking of possible causes here. Although I personally find this one highly unlikely but could a faulty PSU cause something like this? I would suspect you'd have many other issues if it were but its just a thought. Power wise the CPU you have is more than sufficient. Mainly just curious about this and highly doubt this would be your issue.

Thanks for the post. I forgot to mention that yes, DDR voltage has been manually at 1.5v or 1.55v for all of the stock tests and 1.5v or 1.65 with the stock OCs.

[email protected] posted in his guide that 1.4VTT is fine on these CPUs.

I will definitely try remounting the cooler... temps are good and fairly even across cores but if there's any chance it might fix the issue I'll try it. Never heard of that causing instability but then again I'm new to this platform.

I actually tried moving all the RAM from the white slots to the gray slots after posting this and... I couldn't POST. Put them back in the gray slots and I was fine again. Anway, all the RAM shows up in CPUID and in BIOS, so I'd say yes it's installed correctly.

I'll try individual sticks when I can I guess... this is a work rig and I'm under deadline so I'm forced to try to use it with the limited stability I have. It BSOD'd under natural load earlier today at 4.6GHz / 1866GHz and 1.2v VTT/VCCSA so I rebooted and am running those at 1.4v again and so far it's been okay. Not that I think it's actually stable, but so far it's been stable enough....

Is your CPU C1 or C2 stepping?

The guide Raja made was for C1 but I am pretty sure the recommended limit for VTT and VCCSA on C2's is 1.2v. May take a while but if you trawl through the posts in the RIVE club here on overclock.net you will find it has been discussed many times. I am just unsure of the exact voltages but I am fairly certain what I have said is very close, if not exactly what is recommended.

Ah okee.... CPU-z reports stepping = 7, revision = C2.

I'm using the rig for work now and haven't had a chance to do any testing... after it ran overnight without a BSOD I notice this morning it's only recognizing 16GB of RAM... might be why it's stable.

Problem is I just don't which part to RMA here... CPU (bad IMC), MB, or RAM?

1.4v VCCSA is miles too high and 1.35v for VTT (VCCIO) is too high aswell I would never go over 1.2v on this, stock is 1.1v I think. You dont need to change any other settings like vccsa normally, only settings you should need to change are ram timings, ram volt, cpu miltiplier and cpu vcore.

Why did you try running VCCSA so high out of interest? high ram usually requires VCCIO volt IIRC.

At a guess I would say you might have damaged the IMC of the cpu by running those voltages so high, I ran mine at 1.2v for a while and I couldnt overclock the ram as high after that.

I would put everything back to stock and try running p95 on stock first to test everything then.

Are you using an offset value for your vcore?
As others have said, you should not really need VTT and VCCSA at any higher than 1.2. For such a modest overclock, you should be able to just leave them at their stock voltages.

A few things you can try

  • Check if C-states are enabled, and disable them.
  • Try both a lower cpu PLL (i.e. 1.65) and a higher one (i.e. 1.9)
  • Toggle the cpu spread spectrum. (if it's off, turn it on, and vice versa)
