Untangle Club

Protecting a network from intruders, viruses, harmful websites and other bad things can take a whole suite of software that has to be loaded up on each computer. Not only can this be expensive, but each computer suffers from having all that software running in the background. A better way to handle this would be to dedicate a single machine to the task and make it a full time Gateway(Router). If you don't have the resources for a full time gateway, there is re-route technology that allows you to run Untangle on a PC with XP.

Did I mention it's free!

Nice piece of software. I'm not a user yet, but eventually I'll get around to building my own router and this will be on my list for trying out! Consider me a future user.

I'm joining up! My Untangle PC consists of this (Or will once I get the whole file server/Untangle thing straightened out):

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (2.0Ghz)
Biostar T-Force 6100 Skt 754
1Gb DDR
Intel PWLA8391GT 10/100/1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000 GT NIC
Black HEC-brand HTPC Case (270w PSU included)
300Gb Maxtor IDE

I've been thinking, I can't fit any more than one hard drive in this infuriatingly (To work on, at least) small case. Therefore to increase the storage capacity, as I want it to be a file server, I was thinking of using the hard drive cage from a Thermaltake armor that I would more-or-less set beside my Untangle PC. Good idea?

Also, if it is a good idea, are there any simpler ways to supply power and to connect the drives I would have mounted in the cage?

Also, I wish they would release this on a linux platform too.
Would be much more stable.

They have it for Ubuntu and Debian:

Edit: Question. Would this work on the university level network? If I have my own connection in a dorm room and a router between the wall ethernet and my two computers. Can I set one computer up as a re-router? Or would that computer as a re-router be processing all the data for the university computers?

Edit 2: Oh. Nevermind. It doesn't work on Vista. All my computers are Vista.

But you can use VMWare and run it.

I'm trying to get my Untangle server up and running. I'm curious, to run a windows file server do I -have- to use Windows Server 2003/2008 or can I use another installation of windows for it?

EDIT: I hear a lot about Linux servers but I have absolutely no Linux knowledge. Can I have a windows file server under Linux (Ubuntu would be best as its already burned)? If so, can someone direct me towards some place that will show me how?

RE-EDIT: Again, I seem to have answered my own question. I've found some sort of guide on how to set up a server using Ubuntu and Samba. Will maybe write something useful if I get it running correctly.

Just so everyones knows you can build a old school PC for Untangle.. This is what I put together, and its actually doing the job quite well..

PC:
PIII 933 Coppermine
512 Ram
80GB IDE Maxtor
2- linksys EG1064 PCI Network Cards

and this is the Apps:
Phish
Spyware Blocker
Virus Blocker
Intrusion Prevention
Firewall
Reports

The Spyware blocker actually works A LOT better than I would have expected!

Great Program all around!

Do you notice any performance difference?

Torrent wise- Yes
im on RR right now with 7000Download and 387Upload.. and my speeds for bittorrent files seem to be a lot better..

Xbox360 wise- still testing

It seems to be working almost the same- ill do some hosting test sometime within the next few days- My router im using for wireless connections is the DGL-4300 ( yes i have the same setup as you and dhrandy lol )

But I can tell you that it seems like untangle is splitting up the packets a lot better than the DGL-4300 while playing Xbox360 and downloading/uploading torrent files..

So I can say it seems to be working better than the DGL-4300 alone- Like you two have previously stated..

Oh and being i didn't post it.. this is what untangle is handling-

1-Desktop
2-WebSite Server (Personal Site)
3-Laptop (wireless)
4-Xbox360 (wireless)
5-Wii (wireless)
6-HTPC (wireless) (This is also bridge to my Nfusion )
7-Nfusion

Yeah am not a network guru...
Phone way? DSL or Dial-Up?

You have a modem somewhere in your network? The router sits behind the modem.

How it works

Re-Router™ Technology leverages virtualization and layer 2 protocols to dynamically reconfigure the network so that all in/outbound traffic flows through the Untangle “server†before reaching its intended destination. The physical network gateway thinks the Untangle “server†is each of the desktops and the desktops think it’s the gateway. There’s no need to physically re-cable the network and if the host PC ever shuts down, Re-Router™ Technology elegantly restores the network’s original configurations without any downtime. Dynamic network reconfiguration sounds geeky and complex (and under the hood it really is) but to the user, it's 100% automatic and seamless. Some might call it Magic!

Re-route you install on a machine running XP. You can also do VMWare.

pFsense and m0n0wall doesn't required near as much hardware to run. The biggest difference is that Untangle has a little more protection in some areas. It has free add-ons for:
* Web Filter
* Spam Blocker
* Spyware Blocker
* Protocol Control
* Virus Blocker
* Phish Blocker
* IPS
* Attack Blocker
* Firewall
* OpenVPN
* Untangle Reports

If you want to read more about it click here. So instead of just one computer being protected, your whole networks protected.

Untangle is more focused on businesses and network protection. pFSense does have superior network shaping and QoS. m0n0wall is lighter weight and will install on almost any thing.

DSL

I have a router/modem. But I would like to replace it with Untangle.

My current setup:

Telephone connection -> Netgear DG834G -> Computers (wired and wireless).
