[Updated] Possible First Time Build

EDIT: Plans have changed as there would be no real gain spending this amount of money on a rig
Howdy all, as you can see I'm looking to possibly go for a first time build.

Background:
On Friday past, my school received delivery of new computers. So naturally they're getting rid of the old stuff, and it is possible for me to get a free CRT monitor. From this an idea sprang to mind. As I have never overclocked a PC before, I was thinking of building a fairly cheap PC to try out overclocking as I am new to this, and also as I have no other current methods of overclocking. The reason why I say above that I will possibly go for a first time build depends on whether or not I get a monitor from school.

What I'm looking for:
I would say that my budget would be below £150, possibly £200, not sure yet. So basically I'm looking for all the other components I will need to try out some overclocking. My price range means it doesn't have to be/won't be amazing, but that isn't what I'm looking for.

Things still needed:
  • Motherboard
  • CPU
  • GPU
  • RAM
  • HDD
  • Power Supply
  • Case £29.99 Link
  • Cooling
  • Anything else?
Current Total:
£29.99

Thanks in advance

Whoa, even at 200 pounds you won't have enough for a full PC that has decent overclocking capabilities.

The CPU and motherboard will take almost half of the budget.

I'll try to find something, but I can't do miracles.

You are going to have to go the used route.

Thanks very much
I should add that buying used isn't a problem

That doesn't seem like an easy job, you'll probably need a higher budget.

Here's what I managed to squeeze in:
Case [£29.99]: Galaxy Black Mid Tower Case with Blue Bubble Light LED Strip - 450W PSU
Motherboard [£68.20]: ASUS M4A785TD-M EVO 785G Socket AM3 MATX Motherboard
CPU [£43.93]: AMD Athlon X2 240 2.8GHz Socket AM3 2MB Cache Retail Box Processor
RAM [£38.99]: Corsair 2GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Module Unbuffered
Hard drive [£28.17]: Seagate ST3160318AS 160GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 8MB Cache - OEM
Power supply [£52.41]: Corsair 450W VX Series PSU - ATX12V v2.2

Total: £261.99 (With free delivery 'Super saver') [Without CPU Cooler]

Suggestions:

Scythe Mini Ninja or Scythe Mugen 2

Both of the above choices will keep raising the cost.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do

Go second hand off here, list above looks pretty decent, and you can save money by using the PSU that comes with that case, even if it is chit. Also i'm pretty sure you could go cheaper on the mobo and ram and then perhaps get a 4670 1gb.

My build (above) has onboard, which will save a fair amount of cash.

I agree with your PSU decision though, but make sure you don't fully load it as it MAY cause fire, don't mean to scare you but it can happen.

Thanks very much for your build, looks quite promising. I was going to question as to there being no gpu till your second post about on board,

I am unsure about the PSU if I was to go with this build. I have read reviews about the power supply that comes with the case, and they are mixed. Some say it is good, but not too expect much out of it, which is acceptable. That fire thing would be an important consideration.
Cheers guys, +1, will wait and see if there are any other opinions out there.

In terms of the PSU, as long as you don't go above around 350w (which that list would never pull) you should be fine, i would be wary about approaching 400W though. Even if it did, i doubt there would be fire, just a few blown caps. Most PSUs now, even the unbranded ones, have safety features in that a better than even a few years ago.
