hey all , in the near future i am looking to upgrade my 2800 barton , my question is ... do i go 3200amd ..or look to intel fer gaming grunt ?
U see atm i have a 2800 chip in a VERY cheap via kt600 mobo ( this will take a 3200 chip btw) what i need to know is ..A, shall i just say f**k it and throw a 3200 in there ? ..or B,look fer a good 64bit mobo and throw a low end 64bit chip in there ? (with scope fer future upgrade) or blow amd out all together and grab a good p4 mobo and a 3.2 prescot?

dont have huge funds but the p4 3.2 is just within reach

thanks in advance

*edit* as i know little about mobos , names/ models would be usefull

For gaming... I think I'd recommend AMD, but get the best CPU you can and get socket 939.
I'm not very much into AMD mobos but I think DFI/Asus/Abit are the best.
Hope this helps...

Socket 939 is a waste of money, you need Socket 754, espeically if you're trying to save money

DFI LANParty UT nF3-250Gb - 99USD
Athlon 64 3200DTR - 200USD
Some decent RAM

That's a bit steep I suppose, so get that same motherboard, but look for like an Athlon 64 2800.

Below is a few options with your budget...

AMD64 Socket 754

AMD64 3200+ (754)
DFI Lanparty (754) (Definetley the best 754 board)

£197.35

AMD64 Socket 939

AMD64 3000+ (939)
Abit 3rd Eye (939) (One of the best 939 boards)

£186.18

All prices include VAT... (P+P is quite cheap)

I picked these because they are the best bang for buck components plus it leaves you with a few quid to put on a new PSU/GPU later on.

I would say upgrade the PSU first because trying to run a top of the line GPU on a weak PSU will be very bad plus you will not be able to overclock without a decent one.

But i'd get a 3400+(socket 754) instead of 3200+ that's only +8pounds...

£17 more

But why spend £17 more on a chip that is different by only one thing...

3200+ = 200x10 2.0GHz
3400+ = 200x11 2.2GHz

Thats £17 on 0.2GHz that you can get for free on the 3200+... They should both get about the same OCs since the multi is the only difference.

Maybe you're right about those 3200-3400 a64s, but i still think that:
144,5-135,71=8,79 hmm, well not 8, but not 17 as well

Just worked it out properley...

3200 = £124.49
3400 = £146.82

Difference is £22.33

So its more than my £17... That includes VAT.

So my mathematics was bad aswell.

Myself and EvilXP at least still swear by Socket 754 and ClawHammers, and I'll prove why they're so awesome next week when I get my 3400 Mobile in
Socket 939 is really only worth while if you can afford to buy FX chips, and coming in at over 800USD, I think that's a bit out of your range.

I swear by 754 aswell...

939 is for people with money to burn... But AMD is about getting stuff cheap and hammering the hell out of it...
