Upgrade CPU? (E6420)

798 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Nick7269
Hello, I have had this computer for a couple years now without any upgrades. I'm basically wondering if it would be worth upgrading the the cpu? Is there an affordable processor that would make a noticeable difference to justify the hassle?

Because of my current job and unstable job market, I hate to start a new build right now.

So whats your opinion?

Thanks Nick

I'd say it's fine for the time being, especially with the GPU you have too.
If you were to upgrade a 45nm CPU would be advisable, something like the E5300 or E7200 would be cheap and a good overclocker. If you have a bigger budget a 45nm quad would be nice though.
Either way I personally wouldn't.
If you are set on upgrading that system then you would get more benefit from a new GPU than CPU if you are gaming primarily. What do you use the system for? How much money do you want to throw at it?
Depends on what speeds you have it now.

I probably wouldn't, seeing as it won't make that noticeable of a difference IMO, unless you decide to bust out the cash, in which case you're probably better off giving your entire rig an upgrade.

I use the system for gaming and sometimes number crunching. Have there been large improvements in the GPU's?
I think I could spend between $200-$400 on a upgrade if it would be noticible leap.

Thanks everybody for your reply's!

If you decide to upgrade, I would first get a better mobo + CPU, and then worry about the GPU. Its fine for now.

Yea, I think I will just look into a new build next year. I have been wanting two computers anyways.

Thanks again for the reply's!
