I am upgrading an old gaming rig from an ASRock A785GM-LE motherboard with DDR2 memory and a Phenom II 945 CPU to an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard (with DDR3 obviously).

My question is with the hard drive as I was planning on NOT reinstalling Windows 7. It is an older Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s.

Should I reuse this drive with the new mb/cpu (FX6300 by the way) or just buy a new one (WD Blue 1Tb)?

If I reuse, what issues will I have switching it from IDE to AHCI?

Is it worth the trouble?

Edit: After a little thought (just a little) I am getting a new HDD. Ill sell this old one with the old parts. Thanks for looking here.

Yes, I belvieved you should replace the HDD if that is IDE for faster gaming performance.
Besides, the IDE HDD will bececome the bottle neck on the new system hardware.

When using thew new mobo and RAM, we need to reinstall the Windows 7 from the scratch anyway, so worth a new HDD for the new system.

Yeah that is pretty much what I figured. New drive will be here tomorrow. Building a nice budget gaming rig for my daughter.

MB - Asus M5A97
CPU - FX6300 (OC to 4.5GHz cooled with H100i)
GPU - 660ti
HDD - WD Blue 1TB
RAM - GSkill 8G 1333 (OC to 1600 easy, 1866 possibly)
Windows 7
