I have an 8800GTX with a 21" flat screen monitor. Got a little bonus from work, was thinking about upgrading my monitor to 24" and maybe the card too to a 260 or 280. The egg has pretty good deals on these things for about $250 each (bit more for the 280).

Would going from the 8800GTX at 1600x1200 to a 260/280 at 1920x1200 be a big improvement? What about just going for the monitor? Or just going for a graphics card (more 285 if not getting a monitor but then thats overkill right?).

Any thoughts?

Depends on what you play. Also depending on cpu speed, cpu could bottleneck something like a 280 at high resolutions. I would probably go for a monitor and 260 if I had that cash.

If upgrading to a 24" monitor I wouldn't say a gtx280 or 285 is overkill, I play at that resolution with my 9800gx2 and its perfect. With your 21", yeah it might be, but in resolutions of 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 those cards would suit you perfectly. I wouldn't get a 280 at this point in time though, the 285 is about the same price, uses less power, and performs about 15% better.

evga gtx285 for $334 AR, $10 more than the cheapest gtx280.

Pulled the trigger on an EVGA 285
. Im running my CPU at 3.4 stable so hopefully I will be good there. I hear the 285 requires 46A, my PSU should pull it okay but we will see.

Gonna sell the 8800 GTX (with the Accelero Xtreme cooling- never seen it over 55) and my current 22" screen before I get the 24"- we will see how much I can get out of those guys to contribute to the cause...

Thanks for the input!
