Much easier and cheaper in the long run to build a whole new computer with separate parts. No point in upgrading a dell.
IF I were you, I'd start with a dollar amount. That way, you can see what would be the best for what you're willing to spend. I agree, though. I would start fresh.

I thought dell's use the btx format, so you cant use a matx board?

I do know the Mobo is a ory206, not sure if that helps.
I plan on building a pc and giving this to my son to work with not bad for his first pc i guess.

but still haven't decided what to do with a new build yet though!
Now if I upgrade to this motherboard (Gigabyte 785G-UD2H) what CPU should I use and is there anything else I would need to do like update the cmos or anything else?

As my picture shows above, it's an mATX and that does help to prove that.

You could update the BIOS but you shouldn't need to. You'll need to get a new OS copy though.

IF you are building this rig for your son we need to know what he does....what is the budget?

A good cheap CPU would be the Athlon II x2 240 Regor

And windows 7 is a very nice OS. Uses less resources than vista, and feels quicker than XP.

He plays some games but nothing major he's 8, but I appreciate all of your help.
Then the regor listed by tator tot should do him well....actually depending entirely on the budget and games a Sempron 140 would be great...that gigabyte motherboard should be able to play a lot of older PV titles for him without picking up a graphics card

Might i suggest looking into setting up a few emulators on the PC? actually when i was your sons age my dad built me a PC as well and instead of loading it up with PC games he had it setup with SNES and MAME titles galore (all legally of course)

If you wanted to set him up games like that i recommend grabbing the gigabyte motherboard and depending on budget either the sempron 140 or the 240 regor

Keep in mind though that if you have the budget you should really pickup the regor...it is a dual core after all and when your son is done with the PC or if he continues to use it for awhile that dual core will provide overall better performance in the long run

Either way grab a nice logitech controller along with a MAME/console emulator and goodluck seeing your kid leave his room or the computer room anytime soon

Depends on your budget, upgrading both the CPU and mobo isn't too expensive.
