Get an SSD. Hands down the best investment for performance right now. Your GPU is more than adequate for most games and the next generation is coming out later this year. You should be able to find some good deals when people start ditching their 7970's and 7950's.

SSD and wait a little for a new gpu I have a feeling that the prices will drop soon anyway plus that 6950 isn't so bad

Have you considering picking up a 2nd 6950/70? I see them selling for $130-$160 all the time in the marketplace.

That would give you as good of performance (depending on the game) as a 7950/70 for less $$.

Beating he dead horse but... SSD, seriously.

HD 6950 2GB is about a HD 7850 or GTX 660...

The SSD will make boot times, program loads, and file access times much faster. Unless you drop $300+ on a HD 7950 or GTX 670 you won't see much gains.

P.S. have you tried unlocking your HD 6950 to HD 6970?

a ssd is not going to improve performance in games. it will load your apps and games faster. system will be more responsive. so it depends on what you want. do you want a card which is 70 - 75% faster and when overclocked to 1150 mhz will be double the performance of your HD 6950 or do you want a more responsive system.

a HD 6950 can be sold for USD 110 to 120. a new HD 7950 can be got for USD 270 after rebate with 2 AAA games. if you won't play those games those game coupons can be sold for 25 bucks each. think and decide.

SSD are nice, and "faster" ... and while decreasing loading times is nice it really doesn't come into play all that often. Just how many times a day do you re-boot your computer? (maybe once a month if we have a power failure for me....) Loading new gaming levels, that few extra seconds a HD takes to load give me a bit more time to rest.

Now if you update your GPU, you see a boost in performance in every game and every second you play your games.............

A 6950 is not bad, but Crysis 3, Battlefield 3, and Far Cry 3 will definitely Not be play on very high settings with this card. Go for a 7970 Ghz edition or GTX680 if they are in the budget.
