I have some Christmas Upgrades. Unfortunately, I don't know what to get....

Budget: $500

Options:I am leaning towards the P5B Deluxe, 20.1" Monitor, and two 160GB drives in RAID0.

What do you think?

I would get the G80 as it will pwn everything compared to your 7900GT

But with a 17" LCD?

Yeah i dont think you need ta upgrade your card yet, specially because a 7900gt will handle almost every game out today at high settings pretty smoothly on a 17 inch, (if you keep the 17inch) and should even work pretty good with the 20inch

you should get the 160's and puttem in raid0, you got a great mobo already so i would wait for that, i would get the monitor also, and psu

i would say the gfx and the monitor, but thats 600

so
monitor,
psu (for future upgrades)
hd's

I'd say G80 and Monitor......RAID-0 too.

But changing the MoBo is not going to make any major difference, as opposed to IF you were to go from 7900 to 8800.

But I want to get the most out of my Xeon 3060 and DDR2-1000. Upgrading the motherboard should have either a positive or no net change as I can most likely sell my P5W for $190 (retail $230).

The reason I am reluctant about the G80 is:

1. More DX10 cards will be out in a few months.
2. Prices will drop rapidly.

CM Stacker no doubt, with the 20 inch moniter upgrade, and the hard drive upgrade....but im a case modder what can I say?

edit: i think moniter, case and hard drives stick with you longer than the rest of the stuff....

There's absolutely no difference between P5B Deluxe and P5W-DH Deluxe when it comes to performance: http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=580&p=1

BTW, look at the 2nd and 3rd bar, not the 1st one, that's the P5B with an overclocked CPU.

Though if I were you, I'd go for an Acer AL2223Wd Black-Silver 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 800:1 Built in Speakers for $325 and spend the rest on the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) HDDs.

I'm with you on the G80 but again, the major difference in performance that you're going to notice is in the upgrading of the video card along with the monitor.

There is no difference at stock or at nominal overclocks. However, the P5B will get me past 450Mhz FSB and hopefully into the 500Mhz FSB arena.

That is a nice monitor. I was considering a 22". However, I do not think the price to performance ratio is very good. Both the 20.1" and the 22" monitors carry 1620 x 1080 resolutions. The 20.1" has a better contrast ratio, 1000:1 as compared to 800:1. I just can't see paying 63% more for only 15% more screen area. Because that is the only difference.

One more question. Does the perpendicular recording offer higher transfer speeds compared to other harddrives? It would makes sense since the data is denser, and thus the drive doesn't have to spin as much to reach the same data. Is this true? Hard drive capacity is not important to me. I am only using 32GB of my 74GB drive as it is....

I used to have 2x 120GB in RAID 0 and now with this 2x 250GB Perpendicular recording, my PCMark score was higher than when I had the 2x 120GB in RAID 0. So it makes a difference and I do feel that the two 250s are better for everything else.

As for the monitor? I don't know much but I think the 22" would be better, I hope one day I'd get one LCD monitor but it'll be a 24". Though I think my next one, just in case mine dies, will be a Sony 24" Widescreen CRT. I just can't see myself using an LCD.

Well Paul, if you think the P5B Deluxe would be better for those reason, I'd say go for it.
i say get teh 20" monitor.. or a new PSU. no need to upgrade that GPU.. but if you do.. can i have it?

I will sell any parts that I replace.

I think I am going to go with the P5B, Monitor, HDDs, case, and maybe PSU. I can't do it all at once, as I will sell parts as I replace them...
Are you going to post a wanted add for these items to save some money or are you just buying off of NewEgg??

I was going to just order off of newegg or ZZF. If you have anything you want to part with, let me know.

I have a neat idea...how about you upgrade the monitor to a 20incher and the HDD to a 150Gb Raptor. These will make a better gaming experience. You should upgrade the video card to one with DX10 mid next year.

I am planning on selling everything once I get the rep to do so. The only thing I might keep it the memory, because I can't get it anywhere else now.

Just so you guys know, newegg.com screwed me over for the first time today. I ordered some DVDs and got a stupid book called The Outlaw Bible of American Literature...***??? So I just emailed them and went through hell and now they are sending it BY Friday. I get to keep the book...I won't read it though...
