Upgrade or build a new rig?

Well, I've built this computer a few years ago. I think now is a good time to upgrade or build a new rig... considering that the prices of more powerful parts are affordable now.

Here's my specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ 2.21 GHz
4 GB RAM (forget which DDR)
ALiveNF5-eSATA2+ Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT
150GB Hitachi HDD
I also forget which PSU I have.. I think it's around 600 WATT

Does this motherboard support newer processors?
If not, which processor should I get? and which motherboard

I'm just interested in playing the latest games at max settings.

Or should I go for AMD processor + AMD motherboard? If so, which ones?

That motherboard is AM2 so it will take some of the newer processors, I personally would buy a whole new system, assuming you can afford it.

In order for us bunch of geeks to help you we need a couple of things:
  • Budget?
  • Uses - any particular games or just the latest and greatest?
  • Monitor, Keyboard etc? do you need them?

Budget: $1,000 (£610)

I just want to play the latest games at max settings

As for motherboard... all I can say is that I'm not interested in high audio
try this and see if it fits

OCZ Gold Edition 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 Dual Channel (£70)
Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (£120)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 6MB-cache (£145)
Asus P5QC Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2/DDR3 Motherboard (£82)
*Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (£75)
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache (£50)

*Just in case you need a PSU

You can probably throw that all in your current case with your current DVD's and cables, if you wanted to, you could probably go with an ATI5850 if you wanted to, but see what the others say abotu this spec. you could also throw in an intel 9550 (12Mb cache), but this rig would be limited on future upgrades, you could even consider an i5 if thats the way you want to go.

Let me know if you want an i5 rig and i'll spec one up for you.

Thanks!
I heard that Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 can run Crysis at max setting but at 30 fps.

Isn't a Intel i7 920 processor better?

Yes an I7 920 is better, but building an I7 rig you will quickly surpass the £610 mark. Perhaps I5 or an AM3 build is a better idea.

I can increase my budget.
How much does it cost in total to build a good i7 rig?

Well, after I built this rig. I'm not planning to upgrade again next year or after that. Probably after 3+ years.
You'll be looking at about £600 for an I7 rig, thats without the PSU that you'll have to replace, and then the GPU on top of that, I'd say around £800 - £1000 for a half decent one

Thanks, so which parts for an I7 rig?

Is that an exaggeration? If not... wow, never knew that decent PCs cost a lot of money.

Threw this together for you

i7 920 for £205
Asus rampage II for £172
Memory, Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) £107

With that sort of kit you'll be looking at either the ATI 5870 minimum or the 5900 series (£300 - £500), you'd be able to clock that processor to 3.6Ghz on air. If you're getting it next year, check out the GT300 series before you buy it. They could be out in feb but they are going to be out 1st quarter (so rumours say)

Power supply, i'd say an Corsair TX850 (£106) if you have the spare cash then go for the HX series 850 (and its modular and would help with clearing some cables, costs £126)). Stick with the WD hard drives though, unless you wanna go the full hog and get SSD. But lets not get silly about this now

Thanks!

But I've just changed mind about my budget. It's now $1,650 (£1,000)
where do you live? is there a particular estore or store that you prefer to use?

What exactly do you need with this budget? Is SLI/Crossfire important for you? Is HT a must? Does this include GPU, HDD, PSU?

With these questions answered we can better help you build a great PC without wasting money on superfluous performance.

with a budget that high you might want to wait until next feb or march when nVIDIA's Fermi GF100 (GTX 380/75/60) cards are released. Just to see how they perform.

If youre going to have the system 3+ years, another 3-4 months is not that long of a wait.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, waiting for a few months later to check the new stuff out before deciding on what to do next would be a smart move after all. Because at that time, chances are that there will be price drops on the older items (hence I'll save money) or I get the new stuff instead of the older ones. But, I'm just.. impatient like that.

I just made a list via scan.co.uk:

- Intel i7 920, D0 SLBEJ S1366, Bloomfield, 2.66 GHz, QPI 4.8GT/s, 8MB Cache, 20x Ratio, 130W, Retail

- Asus Rampage II Extreme, Intel X58, Sok 1366, PCI-E 2.0, DDR3 1600(OC)/1800(OC), SATA I/II, ATX

- 6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 DDR3, PC3-12800 (1600MHz), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, Classic, CAS 8, XMP

- 2x 1TB Seagate ST31000520AS Barracuda LP, SATA 3Gb/s, 5900rpm, 32MB Cache, 5.1 ms

- 1792MB Gigabyte GTX 295 55nm, 2000MHz GDDR3, GPU 576 MHz, Shader 1242 MHz, 480 Cores

- 850W Corsair TX Series ATX, 4x PCI-E/ 8x SATA, PS/2 PSU

Are all of these okay? I'm now unsure about what kind of case to get, and what kind of cooling to get. My case is kind of small, so I don't expect it to fit the better graphic card (heard it's a big card). I'll be expected to overclock this rig, and that's why I'm here!

Will this motherboard support the newer processor / newer graphic card when they come out? If not, then I'll definitely change mind and buy the newer motherboard that support them when they come out instead.

Thanks again, guys!

unless you do [email protected] don't bother w/ the GTX295.

a pair of HD5850s in crossfire is close in price and a lot faster, plus they will do DirectX 11 in future games. You could always just get one too, and pick up another when they drop in price.

also, those seagate drives are LP (low power) meaning they aren't especially fast.
i would rec
Western Digital Black 640GB (which uses 2 x 320GB platters)
Western Digital Black 2TB (4 x 500GB platters)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB (1x 500GB platter)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB (2x 500GB platter)
