Upgrade to 8GB (Question)

587 Views 16 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  razr7
So I currently have 4GB of Gskill DDR2800 with the below OC on CPU and memory

Would an upgrade to some nice OCing RAM totaling 8GB (2GBx4) throw off my CPU overclock?

I am no expert, but it shouldn't as long as it is all the same clock and timings.

May Limit your top end a little because of extra stress on nb. But saying that ive had a q9550 to 4.0ghz with 8gb of 1066 dominator ram. I doubt you will notice

i dont think it will matter the memory controller is pretty strong on the p35, i think its the older mobos where it matters more (965, 975), afaik.

Should be Good, but depends on NB, may have to up the vNB a bit at most. Other then that you should be good.

Dont really need to OC the RAM that much, but dont want to really drop the CPU oc, cause 3.6 is really nice lol

edit: rep given all around, thanks
As a rule, four sticks can be a little more difficult for an OC than two. Make sure they're all the same models, at least!
@Zzyzx
I have 4 sticks already (4x1GB -> 4GB)

Looking to upgrade to 4x2GB -> 8GB

IMO, if you are removing the existing memory, then go for the 2x4GB sticks. Less heat, less power, less hassle.

I have heard and read that having 8GB + of RAM makes for tougher stable OC's

my nb is screaming when I try to go past 3.6. waiting on my water block chipset to relieve the NB pain.

Show me a reasonably priced 2x4GB kit with cas5 at 1000MHz+ speeds.

All depends on the mboard really. Some chipsets are more capable then others, obviously.

I would go for some MUSHKIN man! Really good for OCing.

They have a really good forum, if you post you BIOS sets and ask for
them help you get good tight timings for your OC they will respond fast.
I had some DDR2 PC6400 (800MHz) and got it around 1100MHz stable.

no ram size is not affected with overclocks
