Upgrade Xbox 360 to 500GB?

54642 Views 58 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  timxirish
Is it possible to do this? I have seen a number of people have upgraded there drives to 120GB drives, but I have not seen anyone go higher. I would like to know just incase I might be able to put a 500GB drive into it since they're finally out.

I am also wondering if anyone knew of a good way to actually format the drive to be useable in my xbox 360. I have googled it and watched a number of youtube videos on it. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a video or tutorial that is definitely proven to work well.

I have taken apart the drive module. I think all you need is a t9 or t10 driver to take the scerws out. However, will the Xbox have trouble recognizing a different hard drive? I do know that users can't just swap out dvd drives since the hash has to match either 3 of the drives that the 360 officially uses.
I will try those out, but one of my questions still hasnt been answered. Does anyone know if it is possible to use a larger hard drive then a 120GB drive?
You mean like the system specific ones to clamp onto the top of your 360? If so then I am most certain that 120gb is your biggest solution.

No, unless Microsoft releases a Xbox with a larger drive. 120gb is the limit.

Like Tater Tot said, the limit is 120GB. You can use a bigger drive, but you will only be able to have 120GB total use of the drive.

I've seen a 250GB drive in the console but only 120GB is visible.

Unless they make a higher drive to increase the limit officially then no you can't. 120 is the max.

Your answer = no. 120GB is the maximum limit for any HDD on the console.
Well thats lame... Understandable, but definitely a bummer. This is just another reason I prefer my PS3. lol

I'm definitely going to save myself a good $100 and just upgrade the my 20GB to a 120GB on my own now though.
oh does the brand of hard drive matter by any chance?

Go on eBay. There is a seller who sells pre-formatted 120GB drives for about $80 shipped. That's what I'm about to purchase.

Would you mind providing a link?

You're going to need to get an extra HDD casing, or use the 20GB one that you own, because it's just the drive preformatted. I'm about to purchase one, and connect my drive to my PC and extract my files, and then load the new drive and copy the files back over.

Honestly I know what to do so it's a lot cheaper and easier, but if you don't know much about using Xplorer360 and connecting your 360 drive to your PC then you'd be better off buying the original Microsoft 120GB drive, but that's too expensive for me.

I think I might just get a 120GB drive from the microcenter by my work. I have an external enclosure at work, and I'm pretty sure I can find out how to work Xplorer360. That or I can probably find a good guide or hopefully you or someone else could help me if I do have any problems.

Now another question is. If I do happen to goof something up would microsoft brick my system or hard drive?

If you're going to try using an external drive in the system it won't work. You can't use an external (USB) drive on the console for game saves or anything other than music and video files.

I don't know of any way of bricking a drive except for not formatting the drive correctly to use on the console if you aren't getting a preformatted one.

I'm picking up a preformatted 120GB, opening my 360 HDD drive case, and replacing it with the 120GB. Xplorer360 is fairly simple and just needs an HDD connected via SATA.

No I already know that I cant use an external drive like that. I have an enclosure so I can format the 120GB drive I'm going to pick up and so I can transfer over all my data. I watched the tutorial from one of the links that someone already posted in this thread. I hope that it is a good example of how to work Xplorer360. I posted the link below if you wouldn't mind checking it to see if it looks like it is a good example.

I can also just pop my 20GB drive back into the xbox 360's enclosure if I have trouble with the 120GB cant I?

Yeah, that video is easy enough and self-explanatory. Just follow it and you shouldn't have any problems. Also, yes, if for some reason the 120GB doesn't work correctly for you, you can always just stick the 20GB back in.

If you follow the directions you shouldn't have problems!

ALSO, make sure you get the most up to date version of Xplorer360 from xbins or let me know when you have the drive and I will send you the up to date version.

Well I am about to go to the store and pick up the drive in about an hour. So if you could provide the link to get it at that would be great.

I am still wondering how to format the drive though. Can Xplorer360 format the hard drive properly to work with my 360?

I'm not sure if all drives will work. I know the WD BEVS drives work with Xplorer360 and those are able to be formatted but it depends what drive you are getting.

There's one link concerning flashing and formatting the drive to work on the 360.

What is a Western Digital BEV? I also am looking at that link you provided and it looks very helpful for all of this as well.

This is the drive that I was looking at from Microcenter.
