Thanks
What kind of games are you trying to play?

Certain games are more CPU biased, and certain games are more GPU biased.
That may influence your decision on which component to examine first.

While I agree that the integrated graphics are definitely bogging you down on games, those first gen phenom processors were terrible. The processor that you're thinking about picking up is a good choice but we need to know what motherboard you're using to see if it's compatible with that processor. Also, a big advantage to buying the 555 from AMD is that you can unlock the other 2 cores on the chip to make it a quad core but that relies on the board having the unlock capabilities.

Need more info plox

Well you have a 780g motherboard that has an AM2/AM2+ socket. The phenom II x2 555 needs an AM3 socket so it looks like you're out of luck there unless you upgrade your board. If you don't want to upgrade the board then your only real option to increase your performance in games is to upgrade the video card.

The Phenom II 555 has a ddr2 memory controller aswell, so it can indeed work in an AM2, AM2+ socket.

It's sketchy as all get out and requires a ton of work to get it stable. It wasn't designed for the AM2/AM2+ socket and for the OP (who states that he's not too tech saavy) it would be a lot of work.

Refer to this thread.

Agreed. There are a ton of great processors that will perform a million times better than the integrated GPU you have now.

It might work but likely not unlocked due to TDP concerns

Yea a couple of people got it working in that thread I linked above but it sounds like it would be a serious job and I'm not sure the OP is up to it. I mean this is OCN and he'd have tons of help so by all means OP if you'd like to try that 555 on an AM2 board go for it. Just know going in that it's not going to work right out of the box. There are ram adjustments and bios flashes that have to be done before it'll operate without a ton of BSODs.

What are you talking about? I've gotten AM3 chips to work on AM2+ boards before. Just check to see if the bios supports it. There's literally no difference between the chips aside from that. If there are differentiating total pin counts, I haven't encountered any problems.

The Phenom II 550 is going to be like god when you get it.

I'd try to find something like a 4890 for the GPU. You can generally find one for like $90 and it'll handle anything you want if that integrated GPU was okay for you.

^this is wrong^

an AM2+ mobo should let you use any of AMDs current processors including six core models (if there is an updated bios for them), but as xd_1771 said, check out the VRMs on that board first, I would suggest reading the thread about it in his sig.

You're right. I was looking at the wrong board when I posted that, sorry for the mis-information.
