Upgrading CPU, Options?

I'm currently running an Acer x1200 slimline pc with an Acer model WMCP78N motherboard. It's based off of the nVidia nForce 720a chipset, and sports an AM2+ socket. I currently have a 65w Athlon X2 4400+ inside of it, and was looking to upgrade to the AM3 Phenom II X3 720e, another 65w processor. I've read that the AM2+ socket was designed to accept AM3 chips, but I haven't seen any documentation on if the Phenom IIs work.

Before I order this chip, I was wondering if anyone knows if it will work or not. Also I am going to be looking for an AM2 replacement that is just as good, using the same wattage.

from what read about the nforce 720 chipset, it only supports the original Phenom not the Phenom II, it might support it with a bios update, if there is one for it.
the am2 am2+ am3 is a tricky chipset. Even if the cpu isnt on the officially supported list it may work with some tweaks. Just like for my board, I just got the 965BE 125w am3 chip and my board is am2. About 5 hours after initial install I am now running this cpu without any problems.

edit: I would stick to only supported cpu's if you're not very familiar with tweaking your bios though.

There was a bios update in early march this year released from acer, how long ago was am3 released and the phenom 2 line out for?

the Phenom 2 been out since january of this year and AM3 has been out since Feb. so if that bios update was out in early march, its probably an update to support PHII but you should call acer or contact them somehow and get definite answers before the mobo goes dead.
