Hi everyone,

My current build is very old using a Core 2 Duo at 2.2 Ghz, with 4 GB RAM at 1333 Mhz and a 9600 GSO 512. I mostly use my computer to surf the internet, listen to music and mostly MMO Gaming (Guild Wars 2 currently) as well as other games (Batman AA, Crysis, Diablo III and so on).

Budget is very low (between $250 to $400 at most) and have been looking into the A10-5800K APU option, but I was wondering if it would actually be any better than my current PC and want an honest opinion and/or suggestions from the forums.

This is the setup I'm working on:

AMD A10-5800K
ASRock FM2A75 Pro4-M
G.SKILL Ripjaws (2x4GB) DDR3 1866 Mhz

This is just to begin with, I'm looking into buying a new PSU (looking at the Corsair X430), Case (NZXT 210) and HDD (500 MB or 1 TB Seagate) in the long run and just use the current ones I have from my old build for the time being.

The first thing would be the PSU because the one I have is a replacement and is not 80 Plus Certified.

Anyone's thoughts would be gladly appreciated.

PSU $58 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199 notice that's 1st
wink.gif

Mobo: $62 or so http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=M4A88T-M-PB-R&cat=MBB

CPU: $88 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2375447&CatId=4433

RAM: $27 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231313

OK ..so that's $235 ..Let's see if a real GPU can be squeezed in there
wink.gif

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=HD5750-PCIE-1024-3-PB&cat=VCD $65..NOT a real one..
but not too bad..better than APU..

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ATI-HD6870-1GB-PB-R&cat=VCD $110 ..not bad
There's a gtx 470 for $115 but then you 'd need to bump up the PSU by around $15,too

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=N470GTX-M2D12-PB-R&cat=VCD

total with 955+6870= $345

total with bigger PSU + 470= $375

955 + a gtx 470 will push any modern game ..on almost max if not absolute max.

Oh..Welcome to OCN

so the A10-5800K isn't that good of an upgrade to my setup? Just asking because I got really interested on the APU after reading a lot of good comments and other reviews. Wanted to have the most up to date components but also consider my low budget.

What about the case? Is the NZXT good enough?

Thanks!

Thanks, does it matter that I don't really play anything above 720p or at max 1440x900 which is what my monitor can handle?

I think the APU build is the better setup. you be able to play most games at decent settings with good fps, while staying below the tdp of the 955 alone.
Can build a small, quiet and low power comp if you want with the Apu.
Not sure if the above cards support dx11 or not, a10 does.

I think you need also an aftermarket CPU cooler for a mild Overclocking of your APU like 212 EVO...

and i suggest this thing for a futuristic upgrade of a Hybrid crossfire HD 6670 DDR5 GPU if you have already an extra money...

but still its you who will decide your choice...

With this setup I should go with the A85 chip instead of the A75? Most of my doubts are because I don't want to be left out of new technology, like the current rig I have is about 7 years old and the only upgrades I ever did were adding 2 extra gigs of RAM and changing from a 6600GT to a 9600GSO.

Other parts were just replacements that went dead on me; had a 250 GB at 5400 RPM and changed to a 180 GB at 7200 RPM, 3 DVD-RW drives because I used to burn...a lot

and 4 PSU's since I used to have my PC up and running almost 24/7.

Those were times when I had a good budget to keep buying upgrades or replacements but now that I'm married and have children I don't have enough time to be on the PC, but still want to have a reliable gaming build to relax once in a while and maybe even set it up to my TV playing games or watching movies in 720p

A85 is only a small step up over 75, you get raid 5 option and I think crossfire ability (dual discretes) and that's it off the top of my head. If you find a good a75 board with proper vrm setup/count, I wouldn't hesitate to get it over a premium board with a85 when considering budget.

The only MOBO I found with VRM support are A85's from ASUS, the cheapest is the F2A85-M/CSM at $99 usd. So basically mi initial shopping would look something like this:

AMD A10-5800K - $129
ASUS F2A85-M/CSM - $99
G.SKILL 8 GB (2x4) 1866 Mhz - $57

Total: $285

Will use some parts from my previous build and would probably buy the following in the long run:

NZXT Source 210 - $39
Seagate Barracude 1TB 7200 RPM - $75
Corsair CX500 - $59 (first thing
wink.gif
)
Cooler Master Hyper 212 - $35

Total: $208

How does this sound? Should I change something?

That's looks good might want to get a GPU later to crossfire with that integrated GPU. Just my 2 cents. Actually the next upgrade I would get for you is a SSD.:) GL!

What about upgrading to the A10-6800K? Haven't seen any specs as of yet as well as pricing (hope they keep the budget cost for this one
smile.gif
), another thing I noticed people are confusing that it will come out on March 19th, but I've read its only to begin production and would not be available until later June.

If the APU's better than the A10-5800K and can be crossfired with a better GPU for performance (even though I heard some games don't run as great crossfired or using SLI) should I wait for that one instead?

Well, I wouldn't wait for anything that has to do with computer parts just because there is always something new
Coming out :] but found this http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-A10-Series%20A10-6800K.html will update you if I find out more info

Seems like the IGP runs just a bit more faster than the A10-5800K, you're right not worth the wait for now. If the APU is a lot better though, might sell mine to just upgrade to that one

Yep! That's what I would do. You could try and xfire with the iGPU

If you've got some oc'ing skills the Samsung green ram can match the gskill timings while @ 1.35v and does 2133 fairly easily for less money (10-11-10 @1.5v for me). My gskill 1866 wouldn't go past 2000.
No point upgrading to Richland, especially gpu wise, it only gets a 44mhz bump. If you oc your a10 950 is easily doable, and works good with 2133 memory (which the cheap Samsungs do).
Hold off on doing dual graphics unless you find the visuals aren't up to par.

Which gskill did you use? The Rigjaws, the Snipers or the Ares? I've been reading some people has had trouble OC'ing the Ares ones.

If memory serves, ripjaws 4gbx2 1866. Bought for llano build. Best I could get was high 1900's @ 1.6v, and baseclock was also limited. My blacklines and sammies had no issues maxxing baseclock no matter the ram multi, at less volts.
