Upgrading to new Verizon Smartphone

Looking at a new phone within a week or so, anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to get a Droid because you're locked into a $30/month data plan while I have full WiFi all over campus and at home, so are there any other suggestions? Personal experience would be preferable.

dont smartphones usually have expensive data plans? I have yet to see any that dont TBH man, the droid is the only phone i would get for verizon as it is just amazing, a friend of mine has it and i am so jealous.
Pretty sure your forced to get a data plan on all of their smartphones.

The data plan enforcement was pretty much in affect right after the Q9C. If you need some help Burn, I am a VZW Sales Rep. I am here to help you.

You know I can't do that, so please refrain from those types of questions.

I am disappoint! Is there any way you could work around it? I really, really want a new HTC Touch Pro2 or the Droid but having a data plan is essentially pointless for me since I'm blanketed in WiFi all day long.

FWIW, I've been with Verizon for well over 8 years.

A data plan is required for both of those devices since they are both a push/pull (download/upload) device. They both have to have a constant stream to the web at all times, thus requiring EVDO, even if you have WiFi everywhere you go.

Maybe a Multimedia phone such as the LG EnV Touch might suit you better, and it wont take a hit on the wallet as much?

Here's a message for your superiors: STOP REQUIRING DATA PLANS (on non-Blackberries). Just found out that I have to pay for a $9.99 data plan on an enV touch (which isn't even a smartphone from what I can tell). I'm almost tempted to go to another carrier if that is the way things are going to go.

Honestly, blows my mind how greedy corporations are getting nowadays.

Droid gets locked into $45 Data or $30 Email and Web plan. o.o Just bought one.

Well I knew that already, but again, I am just a Sales Rep. The enV Touch has a full HTML browser, which means that data has to be sold with it, so Connect plan or $10 25MB data pack to go with it.

Think of it this way, at $1.99 per MB x 15mb = $30, the $30 Data pack is actually worth it. With a Droid or BB, you will burn through MB like nothing, thus making you have overages, even if you are blanketed with WIFI.

And to those whom got a Droid without a data plan, don't come crying when your bill is $500+.

My Q comes with a full browser, too, but it errors out when you try to surf the web without a data plan...like it should. At any rate, I am seriously reconsidering using Verizon, since even if I do go with the EnV touch, I still have to buy a data plan (that isn't needed) with it.

You would be hard pressed to find any other carrier with subsidized smartphones that don't require some sort of data plan.

I have to agree. Only thing I can think of doing is getting a phone from an alternative source (ebay, ect) and doing a over the air activation from a land line phone.

Nah, I've abandoned the idea of the smartphone at this point- even the EnV touch makes you buy a data plan now, and it isn't even close to being a smartphone! That is my real gripe with this phone now- if they really are push/pull all the time, then they should bundle that in with your service if that's what you are going to have to pay for, not get surprised at checkout having to add a service you didn't expect. I dunno, maybe I'm being too cynical but it just seems absurd that they're tacking on a $9.99 data plan for something I'm never going to use.

Wait, what?
I have an EnV touch, and I don't pay for any data plan. I have the browser blocked for me and I pay for my minutes and texts and nothing else.

All smartphones launched at Nov 11th 2008 require a data package.
Droids, Blackberries, Windows Mobile, etc.
That feature code is a dependency of the device. It is required to activate the phone.

If you want a device with smartphone like features, you'll have to pay to play.
$29.99 for "personal use". That's POP3 e-mail, web browsing, etc.

If you're in WiFi all day, upgrade to a basic phone and with the money you saved by doing so you can go buy an iPod Touch.

That's the best you can do without increasing your monthly cost.

The problem (or not, depending on your viewpoint) is that I have big hands, and sausage fingers. Having said that, I don't enjoy using basic phones that have tiny-as-hell keypads and such- I do like the spacing between the keys on the EnV Touch, much better than my Q9. Hence, my desire for it. I send probably 5-10 text messages a day and not cramping both hands is always a nice thing while trying to type.

FWIW I am getting a Touch for x-mas, too
