I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. Would I have to buy the Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade version (once I'm done installing) and Windows 7 Professional Upgrade if I want to keep all my files from Vista?

You won't be able to upgrade

Just back up your files and do a clean install.

No you just need to buy the windows 7 pro version and upgrade your vista premium from that, you should always back up your stuff regardless when attempting an OS upgrade.

Edit. Oops my mistake according to the microsoft site you can purchase Win 7 pro and upgrade from vista premium, but you have to select a clean install. So your best option would be to use the easy transfer wizard in vista to backup your stuff and then migrate it into your clean install of win 7 pro. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...derations.aspx according to that though you can do an direct upgrade from vista premium to 7 ultimate.

Is there a specific feature or set of features in 7 Pro that you need?

Umm your wrong.

You can upgrade from vista home premium to windows 7, home premium, pro, or ultimate as long as you get the upgrade edition.

Ok so I can upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional Upgrade Version with no problems?
and even then, with the upgrade version you can do a full install if he wanted too as well(if they still have that feature like they did in windows 98 or xp). all he would need is his previous o/s disk.

You will lose your files if you upgrade from Vista premium to windows 7 pro. The only ones you can do a direct upgrade (without losing your files) are 7 premium and 7 ultimate, this link explains everything http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...derations.aspx its in my previous post but I'm assuming you missed it.

Even if you could upgrade, an opportunity to perform a clean install should always be taken advantage of.

Is there any chance that you can just do the full, clean install? I mean, this is the preferred method.

What I'm asking is do you have a safe place where you can put everything during a reformat? You see, the Windows 7 Upgrade discs have the full version of Windows on them.

Also, what's the exact reason you want the Professional edition?

I already bought Windows 7 Professional Upgrade version online =/. I also don't have an external (need to get one...). Also, how come the Upgrade versions have the full install on them? What's the point of buying the full version for more money then? And I want professional for some of the xp features.

But I can almost guarantee you that you will never use Windows XP Mode. It's a virtual machine of XP, so you're not going to be able to play modern games on it. Plus, it's intended for businesses who have "productivity software" that's absolutely unable to run on anything newer than XP without using a Virtual Machine. So, Microsoft made it easy and created Windows XP Mode. I'm sorry for saying these things even though you already ordered it, but there's nothing that Professional or Ultimate has that you will wish you had if you had Home Premium.

Anyway, the Full version (the more expensive one) is intended for absolutely virgin systems that have never had a Product Key activated on it before. For example, if I finished building a rig like 10 seconds ago, then technically speaking, I am only allowed to use the Full version.

The upgrade versions have always had the full version on them, its a licensing thing, you are basically getting the full version of the new product at a discount because you own an existing copy of windows.

Ah ok that makes sense. And The Master Chief I did have intentions to try and run games on xp mode to see if it actually worked lol. But thanks for the heads up. Oh well. But I want to make this clear once and for all. I can upgrade from Vista Home Premium to 7 Professional doing the clean install. I would have to get an external to save my files while I reformat though right?

Most definitely. It's strongly preferred by experienced people to format and then do the fresh install - even with the Upgrade media.

By the way, you can install with the Upgrade media after having its installer Delete the partition, create a New one, and then Format it by just doing this:
  1. Boot from the installer, have it reformat as explained above with Delete, New, Format.
  2. Do not enter the Product Key when you are first asked for it.
  3. When you get to the Desktop for the first time, re-insert the Upgrade disc and do the in-place upgrade.
  4. When prompted for the Product Key for the first time during this installation, enter it.
  5. When you get to the Desktop, activate Windows.
Then you'll have a totally fresh and clean installation.

You should always back up first, but you don't need to partition and format the drive. Your "windows", "program files", "users", etc, folders will be moved to a new folder called "windows.old". All of your data will be in there for easy transfer over to the new install. Note, I said "data", you still need to reinstall apps. Unless you just make a total wreck of your HD, there really isn't a need to partition wipe/format anymore, imo.
