Urban Crysis?

So I was looking at this post about Crysis's CryEngine2, and I became intrigued in the capabilities of the engine. After watching the tech demos found HERE (part 1) and HERE (part 2), I wondered, "How well would Crysis handle an urban environment? "Pretty well," I supposed, so I looked for some stuff that people may have experimented with.

I found these Youtube videos:
Crysis - New City Map - not terribly impressive, but still interesting
Crysis City - kinda bunk, but interesting still. A fair amount of work went into this.
Crysis Mod: City Visualisation (Sample) - This is a perfect display of how NOT using LOD in a map can ruin performance. Interesting again, but kinda silly.

Then I eventually came upon City Assault, an modification for Crysis that sets gameplay in an urban environment. I don't know if the mod is still active, but it's nifty. I'd love to do some city rooftop free-running in in Crysis.
Of course, the design leaves some realism to be desired.

Anyone have any input on the subject?

I would love to see a game like cod or killzone 2, to utilize a game engine such as this, although you could not compare a tropical island setting to a war torn place like in cod or killzone, not a palm tree in sight. On the other hand I wonder what these games might have been able to look like if they had used cryengine 2?

Theres an mmo being made though http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/846/846041p1.html think called forged in chaos.

on a side note, wouldnt it be cool if they used it in something like elder scrolls V ?

an urban area game doesnt have to be a FPS, could have 3rd person shooter, action adventure, or even an urban setting for an rpg?
I think the CryEngine 2 would be great in urban enironments as it won't have to render 192419083198313 trees.

You forgot a tree =p

But they're right, you may have some additional reflective surfaces, but, the shadows/items drawn would be much less (unless they do the weeds between the sidewalk) and it should look pretty good!

Think: Fallout3 without the 200 years of dust, and the buildings aren't broken down.. yet. (That's what you're there for!)

imagine a racing game using it, GRID 2 or something, maybe Burnout or an off roader.
Yeah, they say in the tech demo that you can make a racing game in Crysis without doing any coding (just by mapping).

Urban is also great because the large linear surfaces block polygons which (as demonstrated in the tech demo) will no longer be rendered/calculated when concealed by foreground polygons.

Who's up for some free running in Crysis?

I started building a city haven't done much to it lately, I've only got 5 buildings done with working elevators/stairs and breakable windows ect...
Those videos you posted the buildings are just blocks meaning no textures you can't go inside them ect.

If you could go inside all those builds that would be cool only thing is it's going to be years before a PC can handle it unless you make it like GTA 4 where your limited access to only a few buildings...

Also it's a lot of work I spent almost 1 week 10hrs a day making and finishing just the 5 buildings I made, LOL

Hahah cool shots. Umm, the idea to making any "deep urban city" in today's games is to limit the number of interior spaces the player can enter. Frankly, including many more indoor areas wouldn't be too impairing if you could make much of those indoor areas "invisible" from outside of the building. (You have to get the engine to effectively "mute" any unwanted unnecessary polygons.)

Serious control over LOD is necessary for the environment to render effectively. ^_^

Whatcha think?

EDIT: It would be incredible if you could get non-hostile NPC actors on every floor of an office complex. That sorta thing would be wicked realism. I wonder how much RAM it would take to play it.
Not to mention processing power...

In what game? In the mod, there would be if I were to make the maps. Crysis provides some great player abilities that can be used for such things as clearing long jumps (max. speed) or falling pretty far without fatal injuries (max. armor) and the stealth would probably play an awesome role as well. Oh yeah, you can jump really high with "max. strength" too.

In Crysis, there is no free running... yet.

Doesn't that sound interesting? I'd like to see an urban environment done in Crysis. Whatcha all think?

which are very very static, and barely show any signs of life.

They look like cardboard cut outs. Only two games to really have pretty looking tree's are Crysis and FarCry 2

Anyway, my main interest behind the urban environment in Crysis is the use of heights (rooftops) as the main method of travel. Sidenote: Ugh, I wish there was the "tuck-and-roll on landing" feature in Crysis.

EDIT: Actually, I see groundplay really working with the urban environment as well.

Does anyone know whether Crysis allows for mods to add newly-coded features?
