I am quoting the exact PM a friend of mine sent me regarding his doubt:

Hi

a small issue

Actually, I realized that the PSU we currently using might not able to handle 9600GTs.

You know its a cyber-cafe, upgrading PSU will be a huge extra cost.....

According to PSU Calculator the requirement is: 214W
We have: 450W (20Amp in +12)

But in this post, people with 600W having problem with 9600GTs -
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=60826

Can you conform me if I can go with 9600GT with this setup ?

Configuration:

Quote:
intel e5200, biostar motherboard, kingstone 2GB DDR2 800 (single), one SATA-HDD, one DVD-RW.
Plz help him reach a decision so that he can make the purchase asap.

Regards

RB

The Card in that thread is the OC edition (im no specialist) but it seems like common sense that the OC edition would require more power,as far as if you should be ok running the card on a 400 W....someone else who has the card should be able to help you more
Do you know what power supply hes using? cause it may work fine but until i know for sure im going to assume its a generic cheapy and will not be able to handle 2x9600gt's.

Edit, Cyber cafe psu?
ok so the 12v rail will push a max of 240 watts (12x20), needs 90 watts or 7.5 amps (7.5/12)

that is for one card, i could figure out if "9600GTs" meant he has two in SLI. also this is if it is a brand name PSU, cheap no name ones are, well, cheap in both engineering and their marketing.
Yup,I think its being put into a PC in an internet cafe
No, he is buying 5 cards for 5 PCs.....he is worried if his 450W PSU(it has 20amps in the +12V rail) will handle 1 x 9600GT card, since in the above mentioned thread, many with 500+ W PSUs are having trouble running it.
That 600w thing isn't the PSU, unless its a cheap, crappy one.

My 550w Corsair handles the 9600GT quite well, I can tell I'd have enough room to add an extra HD4830 later on. (Which IS happening soon)
the reason why 500+ psu's cant run it is because they are cheap and nasty ones, before i got my current PSU i ran my rig on a 500 watt Antec Basiq PSU, it was cheap but brand name
450w will be plenty if its a decent enough brand. I have run 2x 9800gtx's on my 550w no problem.

As long as it's a good brand of power supply, then yes. I have 30A combined from my +12v rails (50% more than that one but all the same...) and it more than tolerates my card (see sig rig).

there is no need to worry AT ALL

my cheap and crappy thermaltake 430W OEM (not even listed on their website anymore) with only 16A on the 12v rail handled my 9600GT (overclocked) just fine.

i speak in past tense cause i replaced it with a antec truepower trio 430W with triple the 12v amperage....LOL

but don't let that put you off, i only upgraded cause i needed a PSU for a client's rig, and i figured i may as well upgrade in the process

so to reiterate, there is no problem with 430W PSU's and a 9600GT

i dont think so, unless a 9600gt consumes more power than a 3870. check me out, ive been running 24/7 on this rig
i have a 500w cooler master and it runs my 9800GT Akimbo just fine. no fluctuations on the +12v rail.

make sure its a good 450w or above if ur putting any kind of gaming card in a computer.
I think this is the one he owns fr the systems:

looks like crap IMHO, i wouldnt trust it to power anything
Yeah, that looks like its an out-dated design, probably a Powmax internally...

In otherwords, I wouldn't trust that to power a lightbulb, let alone a computer.
Single 9600GT draws no more than 95w. As long as that 450w psu can do 240w on 12v, it may make a cut for that E5200 rig at stock in OP but the question is that 450w psu really can do 240w/20A on 12v as it states. Good 450w psu such as corsair 450vx can do 390w+ on 12v.

most off-brands "claim" to do certain voltages and amperages. in my opinion and experience, either they will NEVER reach those ratings, or they wont hold out for long if pushed to the statistics that are on the label.

Well stated. You should be able to run it, but for how long? If the comp quits after a couple months the PSU has prbly died. It will just boil down to the quality of the PSU. Really only one way to find out.

if the PSU blows in a few months, it could kill the computer too. my cheap PSU died and killed my motherboard, etc...
