Everyone knew this was only a matter of time. Very low energy requirements made GTX 970 very competitive solution. GeForce GTX 970 has great performance to price and performance to power consumption ratios. Making Mini-ITX version was inevitable, what we didn't know is which company would be the first to release it.

it is nice that they use single 8 pin instead dual 6 pins. 1 cable > 2 cables.

In a way. But this is a bit shorter and uses a single 8 pin for its 150w instead of two 6 pin.
It has a bit of a small redesign to the PCB in order to fit the 170mm standard of the mini-itx size, as well as the cooler, as the rest have a bigger cooler.

hunt down a decent DTX board and sandwitch 2 of these together into a 970x2 with watercooling
Wouldn't the PNY 970 make more sense for that? Its single slot, so you don't have to cut off the top DVI connector, its already confirmed to get an EK waterblock and you won't be wasting money on the more expensive gigabyte cooler.

Now we're getting somewhere! I see a near future where we'll have all of the 1080p gaming power necessary running in a tiny console sized space using 100w max at load. The fact that this powerful GPU can be shrunk down to this size means we're on our way.

I suspect that by the time this real, 1080p will be the resolution used by the OCN minority and many will be at 1440p - 4K.

I'm very good with this as long as the larger GPU's and platforms are not abandoned.

It's just a pity the zotac 970's shroud extends out a bit (Yes the PCB is 170mm) but then again most ITX cases are longer than the motherboard anyway and will fit a front rad with space to spare.

It's a little bit limiting though?

If an 8-pin can only provide ~150w and the GPU's can brush against 220w power limit with 1.25v. That's a lot of power to suck from pci-e slot.

No reason to casually violate power connector specs just for aesthetics

errrrr the Pci-e slot has always been rated at 75w,so how are they violating any specs?

The standard of PCIE is 75W.
Also either 75Wx2=150W from the normal two 6-pin connections, or 150W from a single 8-pin connection.
So a 225W is possible and fine and by the spec either way.
Nothing wrong here. There is no violation of power specs in any way.

The reason the card has only two 6-pin connectors in the first place, is to give people with older systems which have only 6-pin power connectors from the PSU a chance to buy this card. Making it a single 8-pin is for saving space and cables.

There's a lot of hullabaloo about potential OC limitations but it shouldn't be different from 2 6-pins.

Win-win would be 1 required 8-pin with 1 optional 6/8-pin connector.

show me a low profile 960 or 970 and i'll be on board and put in my HTPC.

PS3 is cheaper, even if you geta BC version, and you can get good exclusives like The Last Of Us.
