Very Low Budget build for a friend

Ok, my friends 5 year old comp died and he wants a new one for around 500-600USD. Not sure if I'm going intel or not, so just post your ideas here becuase i figure Intel would get more views(<3 AMD).

So he needs everything but Drivers and a Monitor. He has already a HD with an OS and CD-ROMs that are nesarcary. IF you have any money left over, i will probably get him a ~500gig HD for storage cuz the one he has now is only like 100, but you dont need to worry about that.

He only plays CS 1.6 and a little bit of source. I was thinkin of an 8600GT or 8800. He plays CS:S rarely, and they can both handle it for the ammount he plays it. Again, totaly up to you guys, want to hear your opinions. Dual or Quad, whatever floats your boat as well as AMD/Intel. Just looking ideas before we click "checkout".

Any other questions just ask...ill be refreshing for an hour or so

i was thinkin of that $30 420watt psu that newegg has or something close to that. also a case i was thinking the CM 390 or something. the one with the crusade(what else is it?) emblem on the front, lol. Actually i love that processor, precent good for the price i guess. Maybe I can even squeeze in a 4850 in there for like $30-40 more.

Im just randomly throwing ideas out there...lol. thanks for the help dude +rep

edit: thanks sonrosasdjahsdu(sp?)
i will give that a look. +rep for youtoo. and tri-cores are just failing quad cores...I dont like them, lol. Thats one thing i dont like about AMD, they make money off the reject CPU!

i also didnt say that he doesnt need periphierals. Forgot about that one, so i guess with the extra money he can just get a quad. thanks for all the help!
hey, I have an msi nx8600gts for sale.. $35 shipped. Only about 4 months old. Original everything. Let me know.
for gpu u could get a 9600GSO 96SP this guy is selling them for $50
http://www.overclock.net/sale/469677...h-8gb-ram.html
id also say a e5200 ($73) 4gb of gskill PI 800 (its $45 shipped now)
That should provide the core for your build
$500 - $600 Is truly where AMD budget builds thrive. A few hundreds over that, and we're in i7 land.

From the top of my head I can go ahead and suggest an X3 710 and a 790X/GX motherboard. Extremely cheap combos, offering a tremendous bang for your buck. I'd also go DDR3, as the price difference from DDR2 is negligible.
my brother did a build for like $650 with a e5200 and a GTX260. And a 1tb HDD and all that. That budget isnt as tight as you think.

If he's not a gamer, there's not much use for that GTX 206. And an X3 7x0 vastly outperforms an E5200. Although that is a pretty nice gaming build you have put together.

And I will take back what I said about DDR3, as it might prove to be a little too much for the budget. Here's a great combo that fits the bill quite well.

Pair it up with this ram.

And you have a pretty good budget build.

Whatever you end up doing, don't skimp on the power supply. Extremely vital to clean operation and longevity.

Enough Wattage ensures your computer will turn on; a quality build ensures your computer will stay on.

Just did the following system buildup for a friend (it's sitting behind me actually)

AMD Phenom II 710 X3 -$120
Galaxy 9800GT 512 -$110
ECS 780G ATX mobo -$70
WD 500GB SATA 3.0 -$60
OCZ Fata1ity 550FTY (it's actually a really good deal on a nice unit, ignore the name)
-$70
CM Centurion case -$55
4GB A-DATA DDR2-800 $40

= $525 if you already have an operating system to put on it.

If your budget is ~500 I would probably stick with AMD, they have some pretty good platforms in that range. Once you creep up around 700-800 you can do some pretty nice things with Intel if you want, their old quads aren't that expensive, but supposedly the PII quads can run with them.

i7 is really $1000+ land, you're looking at ~$550 for JUST the CPU and motherboard.
