Very slow internet!

503 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Sin100
We just got internet installed into our house (like 2 weeks ago) and just received the router today.
For some reason the internet is very very slow on my PC.

We all connect to it wirelessly though my two house mates speed is very fast on their laptops and when I connect to the router with my laptop it is extremely fast.

I am wondering if it is my wireless card?
I currently have on average 40-50% signal strength whereas I have full on my laptop.

I downloaded a driver for my wireless card and this didn't fix it, I had been using the card at my parents a few months back and it was connecting to their router fine and was very fast (similar connection).

Can anyone help me out?
When I run tests on speedtest I get around 200-300kbps, however, when I run a test on speedtest on my laptop I get around 3mbps.

Thanks.

What is the speed you pay for?

And you running Cable or DSL? if cable, you may have bad download/upload signals which affect the download speed etc

now DSL, i would not be sure on

Firstly hey babe!, secondly have you looked in the router config or reset the router, ran ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew, could it be the operating system if your pc runs a different operating system?

How far are you from the router? What kind of walls are in between if any? Like what are they made of?
Do the other PC's still run fast if yours is connected to the wireless network?
The whole UK network is screwed up at the moment has been all week intermitantly, Virgin just juiced up their service speeds but it all runs through BT's lines and they haven't sorted out the massive flood yet.

Which is a bit ******ed tbh.

Ok guys, well everyone is using vista (including my laptop) except this PC is XP.

Ok weird, I just adjusted the antenna on the wireless card and it now reads 50-60%, I did a speed test and it reads 2mbps, it was going up in sort of jumps/spikes though.

I think I have found my problem, crap wireless card.
I'm quite annoyed as I spent quite a bit on it (instead of ebuyers own crap ones) and it still isn't enough for a very short distanced router!

Sorry to waste everyones time!

p.s - It's THIS wireless card!

There's probably some interference between where your PC is and where your modem is. Bring a laptop into your room and see how it's signal is. If the laptop does fine, that means a good wireless card would fix the problem.

Unless they dug up 90% of the surface of the UK, no they aren't. There isn't a single piece of fibre cable within 5 miles of me for instance.

Virgin bought out Telewest and then 'stopped' all the new cable laying for 2 years or so

My line has gone from 2mb down/1mb up to 500k/10k, in the last week, but improving at night. As opposed to my oldman back in my home town right outside london whose line just went from 2mb/1mb to 10/5 :swearing:

Cheers BT you ballbags, pimping your lines out and ruining your own customers services

Theres threads by a lot of angry people on some forums I frequent moaning about it lol
