Video card gives off a high pitched whine when OC'ing?

Hi everyone,

Having not bothered to overclock my card yet, I downloaded ATITool today and started messing around with it. I scanned for artifacts and didn't get any errors but my card starts making a high pitched whine.

Why does it do that?

that hi pitched squeal/whine is one or more of your capacitors (either on the motherboard or card itself). In my opinion, its simply annoying, and probably wont harm your system over time.

My last build (q6700, 780i mobo, 2x 8800GTs) had that squeal when the GPUs were oc'd, and i ran it like that for over a year, nothing bad happened.

small dab of non conductive thermal paste/grease between the caps will work great. DO NOT cover the top of the caps

Thanks for the answers guys. I'll try putting some thermal paste between the caps like mattliston said.

is normal cap whine... just thing of it as the sound of horspower.
Actually, now i've put off [email protected], it's quiet...

Ok, it only happens to me when GPUfolding.

Also, are you sure it's the GPU? If it's the CPU, it might be fried.

You can RMA the card if it is unbearable. Whining capacitors are a common problem, I'd say 20-50% (depending on how new the GFX model is). It's most likely nothing to worry about, however I have heard that it might be a defective cap and that it can "explode" if you don't do anything about.. Whether that statement is complete BS or not, I do not know. My GTX 285 whine aswell during heavy load, like artifact scanning , not in games though.
Sometimes if I'm on a website and scrolling the sidebar too fast, I'll briefly hear it. Either mobo caps, or gpu caps.
Capacitor sequel, its normal, not to much of a problem.
Man mine is Whining so Hard..my Ear Hurts...

I actually had:
PSU whine (replaced that sucker - BFG GS550)
GPU Whine (9800GX2 / 8800GTS512 both have it)
Motherboard!?

Hate the noise.
