658 Views 12 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Coma
i currently have combined community codec pack installed (most recent version) and it still does not play all the videos i have.

can anyone suggest a codec (not a player) that will play more video files in windows media player?

what type of file are you trying to play?
You can get the full k-lite codec pack from here. That codec pack should be able to play all video formats out there.
Stop, don't install K-Lite before you tell us what it is you can't play.
should've listened to coma.

just so you all know, k-lite codec messes up iTunes. now i get the message "iTunes has stopped working" whenever i try to open it, and yes i have already uninstalled K-Lite codec pack. the problem began when i installed it.
okay so i have iTunes working again, i ran the iTunes repair sequence with windows installer and it didnt work right away, quicktime repair sequence fixed the problem though.

still looking for video codecs that will play most types of avi, divx, and other types of video files. also it must not screw with itunes.

and as a side note, for some reason combined community codec pack doesn't work with audio for some reason. sometimes it messes up where i close the program and the sound keeps going even though the video stopped and WMP is closed. sometimes the sound doesn't work at all. so im done using that one.

try ffdshow http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm The only thing it wont play is mkv files. Haali Media Splitter will play mkv files http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/

I hate codec packs and would never recommend them to anyone

The CCCP should play divx avi files just fine. Use the CCCP where it works, and use VLC media player in the VERY VERY RARE case that the CCCP fails. VLC isn't exactly a codec/codec pack, but you should stay away from those, as you have experienced, they screw things up.

Also, you do realize with the CCCP you must use Media Player Classic and not normal WMP correct? That may be where you're going wrong.

The CCCP includes FFDshow and Haali, and apparently isn't working for him for some reason.

well if you install CCCP and cant playback through WMP correctly whats the point of even installing it. I agree MPC is much better than WMP but alot of people still use WMP as their default player. Im not a fan of VLC but if you wanna avoid codecs altogether try Media Player Classic Home Cinema http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

vlc should do most every type of video format out there the only problems it has are with .mkv, but the video player that's rolled in with the cccp codec pack plays those fine.
so if you just want to play avi and divx get vlc media player.

The CCCP is Media Player Classic Home Cinema + more.
http://www.cccp-project.net/
Notice the "MPC Home Cinema inside" logo

Because WMP is trash that's why, it isn't too hard to switch your default player, and if he must be picky and must use standard WMP, then he can have some more fun with K-lite....

Sigh. Yes, you can "playback through WMP correctly"... it doesn't work for him because he installed so many codec packs and it's a mess.

If he had listened when I said to wait and give more details instead of following misinformed advice, then he would have fixed it weeks ago.

But I'm not going to write something up to get ignored again, so I hope you have fun making ignorant statements and that he has fun following ignorant advice.
