Video problem with 360

I have a 360 which I use on occaison, BY NO MEANS am I playing on it for longer than 4-5 hours at one shot, and I do that like once a month. I really dont use it a lot. However, I just came across a problem, and it might need an RMA..

I turned it on after hooking it up to internet, and it worked good for a few seconds, and then the screen went all static. Really fine static, but static nonetheless. It obscured the whole screen so nothing was visible. This was using the HDMI port. I tried two different HDMI cables with the same result. Then I tried plugging it into a different slot on my receiver (to eliminate the receiver from the equation). Finally I tried using the standard plug with the analog right/left audio with the component plugs, and plugged it directly into the TV. Voila, worked fine. Everything was as crisp as component video can be.

Do you think the HDMI port could have gone bad, or something in the xbox gave in? The console is under warranty until july of this year, so I can still RMA it if need be, but Im somewhat worried about what I would get back from repair.

What do you all think? HDMI port bad? Something else?

If I were to RMA this, would I get a new-ish console back, since it has the HDMI port?

If you dont play it often you may as well RMA it. You dont have anything to lose :/. They wouldnt send you a console that didnt have HDMI so dont worry about that.
Maybe, but it all depends on what MS wants to do. Have you made sure it isn't the HDMI port on your tv? If that isn't it, then RMA the bastard (MS is junk sometimes) but oh well. Stuff happens. Good luck.
RMA it . I believe the HD portion of your video is no longer funtioning and you need to take care of this problem before your warrentee runs out.

Ill make sure to triple check it before I do anything. I dont want my console to make a trip to MS and back for nothing.

I only tried hooking the hdmi to the receiver, but I did try multiple ports, one of which I confirmed worked with my PS3. The only thing that might be going on is that the cable I was using was bad, and the one I swapped it out with was bad. Probably not the case, but Ill check that out too.

Just make sure because it would suck if you did it for nothing.
Well, I did a bit more troubleshooting... The problem is my receiver. Something must be going in the HDMI video part of it. I have 4 inputs for hdmi, and 1 HDMI out. The audio worked just fine, but the video part just generated various colors of static. I bypassed the receiver completely, and both the xbox 360 and the PS3 looked just fine. No issues whatsoever. Makes me feel kinda bad now when I was roughhousing the 360 trying to "make it work."

This is a lot worse than the 360 going bad, as I use my receiver daily for tv, music and whatnot. I bought it on ebay from a store online, so ill give them a call tomorrow and see if there's anything they can do. It should have a year warranty anyways, so ill be covered. It just sucks to have to ship it there for the RMA
We'll see I guess... Thanks to everyone for their input!

Well, that's good you fixed the problem. Also, just to point out that the yellow video RCA cable is called a composite, and the Red, Green, and Blue video wires are component.
