I was talking with one of my friends and we think that companies like norton and what not make the viruses to infect the computers in result the people with use their antivirus program. I know a few people that dont have an antivirus at all and havent had problems. Just want to see what u guys think.

its probably true. The only "viruses" that I have seen have been trojans that usually get in through someone downloading music or "videos".

think about it - if you were a anti virus company would you want your business's future to rest on hackers and rogue programmers? But most companies advertise as if they were a insurance company of some sorts.

i dont use any antivirus software...non. I use the windows firewall - but that just gets in the way :/ Use something like AVG Free.

Company's that make the spyware\\malware\\viruses are usually excellent at it. They hire exhackers and 'rogue' programmers to create their antivirus and their 'viruses'. It makes sense, fight fire with fire. This is why the internet is becoming so riddled with the nastys.

On a similar note, the Sasser worm was created by a guy who wanted to jumpstart his parents' antivirus company.

He got sentenced. In Germany.

Why does no one do anything in America? Ah, the corporations, the fiendishly clever corporations...

I found that unless you open every e-mail attachment you receive or frequently visit porn sites (I'm just guessing
) you need only the most basic of protection. I used to use McAffee but the idea of paying for it made me turn to AVG FreeEdition (it works even better). I also use Microsoft Spyware Beta along with SpyBot and ZoneAlarm. This is more than adecuate protection for me and my web surfing habbits.

OH RLY???
If this were true, Norton, McAfee, AVG, and all the others would have lawsuits on their hands....
Trust me, they do not make the viruses/spyware/adware...
My dad is in law enforcement, and he used to deal with viruses all the time. Recently I found a site that is the main source of a new virus, which hotmail gladly blocked for me. TY PC-Cillin! I mean, c'mon! To be able to get by.... 10-15 years (I dunno how old they are) of antivirus FRAUD, would be impossible.... The longest I have ever seen is only for spyware.... (SpySheriff)
I say again.... ANTIVIRUS COMPANIES DO NOT MAKE THE VIRUSES.

I can see both sides of the "story", but I am going to have to side with the "they do plant viruses" side, simply because it makes more sense to me. Just a lowly "20's" opinion tho.

You think that because you have no idea what a virus is. Not all viruses, very few in fact, have any noticeable effect on your box other than opening a backdoor for whatever purpose. Simply saying that because you're computer runs fine and has no anti-virus doesn't mean you don't have any viruses, it just means you don't have any viruses that you know of.
My friend ran his machine for years without anti-virus software, and it ran great. One day I told him to try it, the program found over 300 viral infections. Just none of them were any damaging to his system. Not all viruses wipe your hard drives or disable key processes and networking structures. Most of them just sit there and filter small bits of data back and forth between your computer and some remote server.

Most of which are used for identity theft...
